  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Just Ordered new 27inch Imac fully loaded...

Good news Patrick, how are the render out to 1080p times? or have you got that far yet?

I received my fully loaded iMac about a month ago and it is blazing! Like Patrick indicated it plays full 5k Epic files at 1/2 rez using the M-Logic thunderbolt enclosure EASILY. I just can't seem to bog it down in Speedgrade either, I can add multiple layers of color correction, sharpening, etc. and it plays smooth as butter.

It's relatively small size means it is easily transportable as well...just took it on a 10 day road trip across Europe and it worked perfectly. Love having so much horsepower in such a small package.

Great cases. I have a Mac Pro rolling tenba case I'm trying to sell. Anyone ? Anyone ? ;-)

Anyone using Resolve with these beasts?? REally thinking to dive into it.
Thanks
Cheers

anyone using these to work in AE? possibly looking to snatch one up, but hows the 4K compositing run?

Since it has some basic power for CUDA I am sure its fine with AE.
However even with a CUBIX and 3 CUDA cards, AE does not work like butter with 4K files (in Mac Pro).
It kinda works better with sequential Maya rendered files but thats due to the ATTO SAS and GTECH eS Pro RAIDs.

AE does not use CUDA. It does use OpenGL for its raytrace engine, which does things like light calculations, 2D projections, titles, etc..

Ooops, see this is why I wanted to pick your brains at NAB ;)

Thanks Jeff, brain freeze on this end :)

Both Premiere and AE can use CUDA. You must enable it for it to work properly. You must open a terminal and modify the .txt file that has the names of the GPU cards so the software can recognize a working card. I will post a screen shot for both tomorrow.

Here is the link on how to enable CUDA.

That is how to enable support for cards not on the "approved" list. After Effects does NOT use CUDA. It uses OpenGL. Hopefully this will change in the near future with upcoming releases. I would also like to see both expand to use OpenCL for GPU processing too -- which Premiere does have limited support for on a few select cards. Acceleration via OpenGL within AE is not limited to nVidia cards as CUDA processing is.

This is where I got confused.
One of our AE plug-ins required a CUDA card.
I had to install CUDA on the Mac Pro just for that.
To date I stay away from the Adobe "3D" experience.
If I want to do real 3D, I fire up my BOXX with Maya ;)

Plug-ins are their own deal. They use a common interface to work with AE, or whatever software they interface with. However, inside the plugin, the developers can do whatever they choose -- support CUDA, OpenCL or OpenGL for processing, for example. Use a BMD or AJA card... whatever. Think of plug-ins as independent little apps that are launched by, and communicate with, their respective host application. CUDA use within plug-ins is becoming more common...

Yes, Adobe's "3D" is pretty much crap. It's not really that, it's just that there isn't any. Now that they have Iridas/ Speedgrade under their belt, 3D is really the last piece of the puzzle for them. I am expecting something to happen on that front in the near future.

Years ago after Alias|Wavefront faded I was hoping Adobe would pick up Maya.

Now Im kinda glad they didnt.

I was betting they would pick up SoftImage when Microsoft dumped it, instead it was picked up by Avid... Now, like many things in the post industry, XSI has been assimilated up by the AutoDesk collective. If Adobe were to merge or acquire a 3D system at this point, my money would be on Maxon/ Cinema4D. But that's pure off the cuff speculation.

Or bring back EIAS and formZ ;)

Well., if we are going to be wishing to bring back old buddies, how about Real-3D? Heck, bring back MATADOR :)

haha too funny ;)

Disney animation studio on the Amiga!

Wait wait wait, today is not throwback Thursday... back to thread.
