Hey everyone! After all the amazing help and research on here I was finally able to purchase my first RED Weapon 6k MG and it came in today! (Shoutout to reduser Ben for being so great and selling it to me)

We went through escrow.com (highly recommend using that site for any major purchases, took all the worry out for both parties). Anyway, I have 5 days to review the camera and give them the thumbs up. Ive already turned it on, verified everything works okay but just want to make sure I'm not missing any steps in my walkthrough of the camera. A couple things I did notice was during the startup, the screen glitches out a bit and lines appear for like a second horizontally and vertically. Not sure if this is normal or not. It is on an older software (7.0.4) and needs to be upgraded to 7.3.0 which I noticed in the release notes for 7.3.0 they mention "Fixed horizontal lines on startup with DSMC2 RED TOUCH 7.0" LCD". Unfortunately I don't have a mag reader yet so I can't update the firmware to see if that solves it. Just want to make sure those aren't signs of any underlying issues.

The only other thing is that the camera feels warm and is putting off some heat. I can hear the famous fans working and I know these cameras put off heat, again just being super cautious. The temp on the bottom says 38/64 degrees. Again still learning all of that stuff and what that even means. I recorded a couple long clips and it didn't get any hotter and playback is fine. This was a big investment so I just want to make sure I'm not overlooking anything before I give escrow the all good on my end. So any other things I should be checking for or looking for, please let me know!

Thanks again in advance for anyone willing to help out a newbie!

If the fan is loud, first check to make sure the fan setting is on ADAPTIVE and not manual.

If it is on Adaptive, perhaps change the fan temperature setting higher (maybe to 42) cause your room temperature might be warmer than the current fan setting and thus it's trying to cool it down. ALSO when the temperature heats up to that setting and is relatively quiet, black shade it (manual should do versus automatic).

Hope this helps.

Thanks Wil! The fan wasn't obnoxiously loud. I've read that they aren't the quietest things in the world and that's okay! Just wondering if it feeling a bit warm is how it should be?

Yeah the warmth is normal as long as the fan is relatively quiet. It should feel warmer than room temperature but not hot.

Yeah I guess that’s probably about right! It’s not so hot to where I can’t touch it but it’s just weird feeling it. I had it sitting on my desk and I was recording a long clip and I could feel the heat coming off a few inches away. Like I said, nothing earth shattering but I’m coming from a Sony A7r so fans and heat and all that is super foreign to me. I have so much to learn

Also, just picked up this tip in a Facebook red group- I’ll be sending it off for red to do an inspection and get a re-certified 90 day warranty. Unfortunately if they find anything I won’t know within 5 days for the escrow transaction but it will still provide some peace of mind!

Congrats Kerry! Good choice. Make sure to post your work here for us to see with it!also any technical stuff or doubts don’t be affraid to ask. The community is sure to help. The people here are absolutely 5 stars.

I recommend setting the fan temperature at 42 degrees as well and blackshade to this temperature.
That the camera get a bit warm is normal, our ultra bright screen also gets hot (and soo does the smallhd monitor too).

Good lucka and enjoy the ride!

Thanks Sergio and Andreas! Already having such a blast with this camera. I have so much to learn and I'm looking forward to the journey!

Well, shipped it off today to RED to get checked out and get the Re-certified warranty. Going to suck being without it for a little bit but hoping for a quick process and that there’s no hidden costly repairs( I’m sure there won’t be, I shot a ton with it before I sent it off) so now I’m just waiting. In the meantime I’ll be watching as many tutorials I can. My color grading needs some a lot of work and I still need to figure out how to get the most of this system. Will also be collecting accessories so if anyone has any suggestions of what I should get I’m all ears! Building a cart on Adorama at the moment

It has been almost a month :) what was the report?
