  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

just cracked my lcd on my camera

the v1u... can that camera record directly to a computer, skipping the tapes? i would assume it can. The HMC-150 looks really nice because it records avchd to solid state. Does that camera record to sd cards? because those would be really cheap to aquire. I just really dont want the deal with tape. I already got a secondary camera i have to record directly to the computer because it is tape based. i dont have a second comp to record another camera.

The v1u has hdmi out (z1 doesn't) so can record to any hdmi compatible recorder or computer. I have two blackmagic intensity cards (I paid about $400 each but I think they are $189 now) in my Macpro which not only let you record but you can do live switching and transitions. I imagine they are available for windows too. I like SD cards but there isn't much that compares with 11GB/one hour tapes that are available for $2 now and automatically archive:

Can you get an hour out of an 8gb card? even two? I can't recall that, but i could be wrong.

at 720p, 24pn, u can get 40 min roughly out of 16 gb worth. lot of people are jumping the hvx ship for af100, you can find some really bargain deals.

that's what i thought...only 2/3's of 60mins......i actually thought it was less, but that must be at 30fps then.

I'd still recommend the HMC 150 over either the V1u (1/4" chips, tape based) or the HVX-200 (been around a long long time, much more expensive media). The only advantage either of those two have over the 150 is that the HVX is 4:2:2 & the 150 is 4:2:0. The 150 has far better resolution than the HVX.

where am i guna find an hmc 150 for 2500 bux! if u guys know plz tell me

u can always post a WTB ad on dvxuser... lot of people are gonna be trading up for af100. and you can always take your chances on ebay, b&h sometimes have some very good used camera deals.

The new Sony NEX VG-10 might work for you. It has a DSLR sensor in a camcorder body. Main disadvantages are lack of 24p and XLR in, but if you're shooting weddings that may not be an issue.

In my case XLR inputs are a must. so that wont work. Im really leaning towards this HVX200 for 2500 bux, includes 2 8gb p2 cards. If necessary i will record directly to a computer to get the hour long record times. the reason i like it is because id be buying from a friend who i trust and i bought a camera from him in the past. + hes already knocked the price down 200 bux.

So working with my crew today, in the next couple weeks i might be able to scrouge upwards of 3200 for a camera. Any new suggestions?

I also found a hvx 200 with a separate FS 100gb hardrive <---(COULD REALLY USE THAT) with a broken zoom, either button or motor. either way the manual zoom still works. I never zoom on a recording shot so that really isnt a big deal for me. The whole package is being sold for 1500 bux which i think is a wicked steal. What do u guys think?

I find that the hvx200a/hpx 170 even with it's improved low light performance, they are feeling like very dated cameras. DVCPRO HD is a very old codec and suffers from very bad macro blocking, and I've seen aliasing under extreme conditions. HMC 150 may still be a better bet for you, cheaper recording medium (2x64 gb sd cards can give you 12 hours of recording vs a spinning disk firestore) yes you lose the 4:2:2 but that's more important for if you are pushing the grade harder or keying.

but if you are set on a hvx, i would make sure it's at least a 200a, or a hpx 170. Their low light advantage over the original is fairly noticeable.

Go for it and save/spend the other $1700 on lights, mics or whatever else might be good for your productions. Or use it to buy a gh2 when it comes out and compare them then. Can't go too far wrong for $1500.00

for that price, there's no argument. there's 50/50 reviews on the firestore though. a huge mix of nightmare stories, and lots of positive reviews too. it's a mix big, so just be careful with it.
