After my shoot downtown, I met the family at the W for a little weekend getaway. This is a quick grab of the boy right after waking up. Panchro/i 32mm, T2.8, ISO 2000. Still so in love with this camera. Incredible at 2000. Alchemy friggin rocks. Scarlet is an awesome deal but I have zero regrets about my M purchase!

That's beautiful Chris.

Sniffles. I just sold my Pancho/i 32mm, even as my Epic-X is in transit shipping to me.

Thanks a lot for reminding me what I'll be missing. :(

Looks great!
And at iso 2000. The grain looks like old 35mm.

Thank you for sharing!

a 4k image riduced to 960x540 isn't very telling of how good or bad the original was. Perhaps it was very dirty and poor at 4k but by making it a thumbnail, you solved the problem.

How is the Epic compared to Red One (without mysterium-x)? I really love the Red One. Within its limits, I find it has an extremely natural color rendition. I could not wish more. If I'll change it for Epic, it will be because the Epic is smaller and lighter, and for that increased dynamic range. Non because it is more beautiful or natural. What's your opinion?

I don't know, I have this feeling the Epic looks a bit poor. Is it just because of the increased dynamic range? I'm used to the flatness of Red One, but the Epic flatness looks extreme. I keep seeing grabs of very unnatural colors, very often they are almost black and white, like it has been fashionable for a while now, but i don't know if any color correction has been applied. Color correction is supposed restore the vigour of the natural scene which can be diminished by the process, rather than making poor a scene that wasn't.

Whatever, I think the color in most films made in the last 15 years looks like shit. It's either very dull, unsaturated, or, on the opposite, oversaturated and artificially contrasty, like if we the public were so stupid to not even understand what genre a movie is without the most obvious filters applied to the frames. Perhaps only comedies have natural colors. Also the voices, in the italian doubling sound like cartoons. fake and excessive.

ok... I didn't really mean this as a camera test but here are some bigger ones for the pixel peepers...

Full Rez

Ketch... I'm well aware of your feelings towards Cookes.... LOL.

Thanks all for the compliments.

Hmm - Looks good on my Macbook Pro 17" monitor where I am surfing the web from now. Like, very natural. Like really really natural.

Alberto - I would urge you to sample some .r3d files from epic, bring them into RedCine X Pro Beta 5 and try grading them how you like. They are really quite good, expressive, and retain a lot of detail, clarity, and richness.

Since we are capturing Raw - its all about how we treat the image. Its a Digital Negative, so now our responsibility is two-fold - one as a cameraperson, two as the steward of the processing lab to ensure that the image is how we want it to look. Happy to talk with you about how I use Redcine X Pro and how I achieve the results that I am seeking.

Cheers,

Dan

for "natural" i mean something that looks like what i'm seeing with my eyes, not more flat, not more contrasty, not more saturated, not less saturared. Just like i see it with my eyes. what matter is the final result, of course; i don't mind any color correction, if it really corrects the image, returns it closest to reality, rather than distort it.

right, but how you'd compare it to Red One, if you had or have the chance to make a comparison? What are your deep feelings, guys, about the way the Epic captures reality, and the way the Red One does? apart from excitement and surprise.... (going beyond the novelty thing)

Actually I haven't got a color profile I like better than others, to me any color profile is a romantic interpretation and therefore a thing for gilrs. I'd just color correct in the purest sense of the term, that is adjust my small exposure errors in order to restore reality as much as the tools let me do it. Of course if the camera is flat to be safe (or safe to be flat), that's fine, I like the help that this brings me, and I use it. I want to use it to restore reality. What's more convincing than reality. Something that is obviously fake is not more convincing: it's less convincing. So, I don't have a preferred type of image. I only accept a first generation copy of reality. A copy is more than enough, no need to degenerate things further. A very hi-fidelity camera is a bit wasted if I wreck the results. I may change my mind in the future but now I think so.

among the many that may be, do you know the web address of any .r3d files from epic that you suggest to look at for someone who is looking to have an idea of the raw possibility AND ALSO the peculiar character of the Epic? possibly daylight and outdoor pictures. the way plants, animals, sea, ground, landscape are reproduced. And of course... our friend the people.
thank you
