Hello RedUsers,

I wanted to let you know that I have posted part one of a three part video series about cinematographer John Leonetti, who is just now finishing up the DI for a film he shot in 4K with RED. He's been very happy with the camera (actually he had six of them on location in Canada) and compares it very highly to the other HD shooting experiences he's had.

If you are interested, please stop by and take a look and leave me any feedback or suggestions.

Best regards,

Thanks Lim,

It was great getting some first hand information about working with RED. From the short time I spent speaking with John about it, I'm already hooked. I can't wait to do a project with it.

I hope to have parts II and III finished and posted no later than the first part of next week.

Best,
LJ

Nice site and interesting interview Lawrence! I thought John's comments that his process for shooting on RED was "more like film" and that he meters all his shots as though he was shooting on a specific film stock were very interesting. I'd be curious how many of us are shooting that way vs. using "the black tent" approach.

Looking forward to the next parts in the series.

yeah, comparing red to HD kinda leaves a bad taste in your mouth,,red is red.. nothing else like it !

Very interesting...nice

Great Interview Lawrence,

Just want to add to this, we need more cinematographers like John Leonetti. We were the camera rental company who supplied the 5 Red Cameras packages on the film "Hybrid", and telling you it was a pleasure working with John.
As a camera rental supplier we had to introduce and train some of our A film crew, and with John’s confidence and positive attitude it really made it easier on our team.

Again outstanding work Lawrence, we are looking forward to Part II of your interview with John

Geez, bad taste in your mouth? It seems to me if you pigeon hole yourself into this kind of thinking, your going to miss out on the knowledge that a guy like John can share.

I felt extremely fortunate to have worked along side John, and feel his opinions both positive and negative about the camera are valuable. John and his family have been working in this industry for a very long time, and have seen many technologies come and go, so he has a very broad base of experiences to draw from, more so than most. I personally would take more stock in what John says, than someone that has only shot digital since he has this range of experiences.

On this particular picture there were no chants of Red's superiority over film or HD, and the fanboys with their one sided point of view were left at home. It was approached with neutrality, and honest reality, as to let John and Eric use the "tool" like any other "tool" that has benefits and limitations. Ultimately we ignored all the hype and rumors and formed our own opinions based on experience on what this camera means to the movie making business. In the end it was positive, and that is the important point.

Good point. This is similar in some ways to the assessment that I felt that I got from Steven Soderbergh's interview on RED.com. That RED has a quality all its own and it's full potential is just starting to be explored and that it offers a new palette for consideration.

I'm just glad cinematographers like John are willing to discuss how and why they chose to work with it.

great article ! red IS like a different film stock, well actually, it is like as many film stocks as you can imagine. "nothing else like it"

Hi All,

Yes, John is a rarity in this business; someone with an amazing depth of knowledge, credits as long as your arm and a genuine excitement about new tools and new ways of practicing the craft. I feel very lucky to have had the chance to talk with him and share it with fellow filmmakers.

Thanks everyone for your feedback and support.

Best regards,
Lawrence J.

What a great interview, Lawrence. I bookmarked your site. I like that casual, sit-down style.

For those who are complaining about Red being compared to HD.. chill out. Most Red One features will be finished at 2K or 1080p.

HD? How is Red like HD?

I just finished my second feature with Red 1043 "Z". The images are beautiful and are not at all like the HD video that I have shot in the past. I hope to never go back to HD ever again.

feeling you bro. Video is for, well, videographers! :) in a good way :)
