  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Here's a 5120x2700 jpeg grabbed from a 24fps stream:

It's incredible to me that this camera is capable of making 120 of these a second. Also note that this is without a particularly pretty sky, but it was fairly clear for Los Angeles. The motion version of this is interesting because it looks like a really detailed still until you notice that the blimp is moving.

Love this.. Just like moving around in a big map! Well done!

I can read every god damn ad and sign! And this is a city-view from far away! Now THAT is why we need 5K! :cheers2:

I was thinking the same thing. And the next thought was changing them all. :) :) :) :) :) :)

Look out.

Nice city shot! Great detail, especially considering the haze/fog too.

Some more footage...

Some more footage...

Here are a couple of slow motion samples. I confess that I don't normally over-crank all that much, but it's quite hard to resist 96fps at 5k. These were shot with the Red 18-85 zoom, ND .9, 1/1000sec shutter. Focus on the dog is only spot on in the first half of the clip.

Recents thoughts/observations:

  • Although there are still some features to be enabled, I am pleasantly surprised with how robust the firmware has been. The things that are in place are really very solid. I've had the camera for a week and a day and am still on the same firmware version!

  • I took the camera to shoot my son flying his RC airplanes this morning. The size and weight difference between this and the old Red One is already noticeable. Once I'm able to ditch my baseplate and Red battery and battery plate and run it with a small battery in the handle it's going to be incredible.

  • I forgot to bring the EVF to the airfield. In bright sunlight the LCD is going to need a hood.

  • I have played around a bit with some of the pieces of the DSMC rails, handles, etc. Production pack gear with Red One, while serviceable, wasn't particularly well received in pro situations. I don't think that's going to be a problem with this next generation of support gear from Red. It seems top notch, well thought out, and of course the modularity is going to be fantastic.

Hi John:

Great thread! Thanks so much for taking the time and sharing so much.

I had a quick question for you since you also own the RPZ 17-50 and RPZ 18-85...

You mentioned shooting your son flying RC airplanes and how you are looking forward to shooting with a small battery in the handle of EPIC, do you think it will be practical and comfortable to shoot handheld with the 17-50 and manual focus and/or zoom with left hand in that scenario? What about the 18-85? Or am I just dreaming?

Thank you John so very much for sharing. I have to say, these clips completely blow me away. Everything about the images are staggeringly beautiful: just look at the color and the skin tones, the motion, the dynamic range, the knowledge that this footage will force me a change of underwear screened at 4K, truly exceptional.

Red, seriously, thank you for your pioneering dedication in throwing molotov cocktails at the established, powers-that-be, thinking. I would follow you into battle any day.

(PS: Moderators, feel free to delete this, I don't meant to muddy up John's post. Just couldn't help myself.)

Mazel Tov!

I'm not completely sure whether the 17-50 is going to work in that scenario, but I'm hopeful. Eventually, I expect to end up using Red electronic lenses and mount for non-cinema style shooting.

As far as the 18-85, I like that lens, but you're definitely dreaming. That thing is a beast and has doesn't belong in the same sentence as hand-held.

Thank you John! A smooth image yet so sharp at the same time.

Where you trying to find the acceptable limit for underexposing and pushing (non-HDRx ) in post for mid-day sun? Or are these un-graded?

I wonder if there is a little more than can be had at the top end without sacrificing the rest.

I was basically just using the .9 ND I had plus shutter speed to find a decent exposure. I didn't feel like anything was blowing out, so I wasn't tempted to try HDRx in that case.

As far as grade, in Redcine I think all I did was crush the blacks a tiny bit, put contrast to about halfway up, and maybe a little playing around with flut to get the brightness where I wanted it. But honestly I didn't really labor over it much.

It was quite a pleasant surprise to see you at Creatasphere with your Epic, John. Thanks for being so gracious with your time to answer all of our questions. I have to admit when you obliged a few onlookers' request to hold it off of the tripod, I was sweating for you. Truly a pleasure to meet you.

Thank you for letting a lot of us crawl all over your camera.
Not having any hands on with a Red camera before, the menu system was better than I imagined.

The most fun I had was to step back and watch the expressions on the faces of people who came across it for the first time.

It was my pleasure to be able to show the camera off and bask in some of its reflected glory. Pretty great to see how easily people could walk up to the camera and start changing settings without so much as a question. That, uh, doesn't really happen on a Red One.

Sorry I had to leave early, but my son was participating in an "Egypt bee", sort of like a spelling bee but with facts about Egypt. And speaking of reflected glory, he came in 1st place!

Hey guys, shooting a commercial on John's Epic M for the next 4 days. Took the Epic out for a test run this afternoon and i must say that I am pleased with what I'm seeing. All these test grabs were shot at 96fps. All shot with natural light. Thanks John for flying all the way and for trusting me with your camera.
