  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Jim Cameron buys...

50 Epic Ms.... that should keep the camera technicians busy until time to fire up the production lines for Epic X. Sounds good for the health of the Company which is in turn good for the customers.

Congratulations all around.

Pretty amazing news Jim. This should go a long ways towards solidifying Epic's place at the top of the heap for some time to come. This also sounds like a pretty good indicator that you are finding the parts you need to at least build the "M"s. An amazing feat for a young company...epic.

Holly F&%...Congrats Red!!!!
Do we know for what? Since Avatar is mainly performance capture my guess is that 25 Epic 3D rigs are for another project not for Avatar 2. Unless he will be shooting the live action with multiple units, which I doubt.

So $58,000 for one Epic-M.

Multiply by 50.

$2.9 Million dollars worth of red epics. 50 cameras that will create the next 100+ years of cinema history.

I have goosebumps thinking about what I would do with that many cameras, that many RED EPICS for that matter.

Just time to wait my turn and purchase my own (eventually) :D

Congrats Jim and RED.

Saw this coming, as many else probably did too. Of course we should be happy for him, and we all are I bet. I am. Sounds like a big pile of fun stuff! But I might say he should have been mentioning Red a lot more in his recent appearances. Being so into specs and quality himself, it sounds only logical that he would have immediately understood the benefit of using Epic for his fervently proposed 48fps 3D feature acquisition and delivery. And such a tech-head should hanging here! Just sayin'...

Maybe he already does under an alias. Now lets see some bullet-time with all 50 synced and shooting at 120 to 300fps.

This is great news for Red, not like you need anymore pats on the back. Still, I would not jump to any conclusions about this move. Since so much of Avatar will be cg, I doubt he will need 25 3D rigs so I imagine these will be used for a host of Pace projects. But I imagine that these will get some use on Avatar. Keep in mind that James signed a deal with Arri to help develop their 3D technology with the Alexa M. This is very interesting news. I am not sure what to make of it. It sounds like Cameron is establishing ties with all the digi cinema companies that are producing cameras ideal for stereo rigs. I imagine he will get involved with Sony as well since he used their cameras on the first Avatar.

lol what's $3million when you can have 50 Epic-Ms! :D

While I'm certainly glad for Jim and the RED Team for this big win, personally, I'd much rather hear about Jane Campion buying two Epics than James Cameron buying 50.

Wait a minute!!!!...I think Jim J. is hiding something here....:reddevil:

I don't believe J. C. will buy 50 Epics-Ms just because he have had an epiphany after NAB.
Something is been cooking here for long time. Nobody, even JC, will spend 3 million dollars on 50 cameras without testing them. So, I think there is a back history here waiting for long time to see the light……..I am wrong? :emote_happyhappy:

Good point. Would love to see those tests :P

That is awesome, congrats. Stoked to see Red picked up by even the most major (or should I say EPIC...I know, lame joke) of filmmakers. Obviously the camera warrants interest from all parties, but I also wonder...if camera was taken out of the equation (hear me out, it will make sense), if this choice would still have been made? My thought is yes due to the post workflow. Not just the "ease of use", but the fact that, if this is for more Avatar or any effects heavy films, Weta would most likely be the post or effects company. Weta, being PJ's baby, has done a number of RED shot films and I would imagine they are quite comfortable with the workflow. It is also quite curious, as mentioned previously in the thread, for this to come about while also co-developing a camera. Just thinking out loud...or rather, in print. Either way...

Congrats Red, this is a big win whatever the reasoning, both for the artist and the audience...and the equipment manufacturers ;-)

Wow, that is big news. I gotta say, Cameron's got the money and reputation to buy anything he wants (almost literally), and that's a major coup. Arri sent some publicity out around NAB to promote the fact that Cameron had tested the Alexa M in a Pace-Cameron 3D rig, so I thought it was a fait accompli that he was going in that direction.

Oops, I just felt a great disturbance in the image acquisition force

I'm not exactly sure why... Peter Jackson, Ridley Scott... and almost every one of the biggest budget movies in the works.

Jim

Oops, I just felt a great disturbance in the image acquisition force

Hmmm Maybe because you really did create a game-changing camera with the Epic...

Well Engadget sure is fast:

James Cameron Picks Up ...

It thanks the "many" who sent the info in ... wonder how many were late night Redusers :P
