Jeff Cronenweth, ASC Nominated for ASC Best Cinematography

Great News, my blu-ray copy of the Social Network gets here on Friday. Looking forward to seeing it again.

Great news!

THE SOCIAL NETWORK will win oscar in Cinematography is my prediction. All the best Jeff.

I have a strong feeling this will be Deakins' year, he's God among cinematographers and he's never won. But congrats to Jeff, is this his first nomination by the way?

Deakins has already won a bunch of awards for the cinematography in True Grit, and he's also receiveing the lifetime achievement award from the ASC, so I think (and hope) you're right.
First nomination for Cronenweth, Libatique and Cohen, while it's the third one for Pfister and the 9th for Deakins.

dont have any trust on academy, like Rudi said Mr.Deakins nominated 9 times and never won..Strange isnt it?

I think he should have gotten it for The Assassination of Jesse James by the Coward Robert Ford. Also I think this is one of the problems with the Academy Awards. People who deserve it, get's pushed aside for some new one-hit wonder. And by the time they have got a billion nominations, they aren't making the quality they used to, but recieve the award because... y'know, the lifetime achievement was given to someone else who got screewed too, but is nearly dead - so we better give it to him/her.

Anyways, it's always nice when you can't predict the winner on before hand.

If there is such thing as cinematography "better" than other at the level of the nominees, then I feel that the elegance and fluidity with which very complex shots were accomplished in The Social Network and the resulting sheer feeling of intimacy we get from all those dark scenes is a more polished result than, say, the pitch perfect, expansive work of True Grit, but having said that, Jeff may well fall victim to Deakins just being "due", plain and simple. This is the way the academy generally works, then again, the fact that voters for the cinematography award are rarely aware of the intricacies of the cinematography art was painfully made clear when Avatar won the one Oscar it had no business winning, cinematography. So, at the end of the day, it is anybody's game. The good thing is, win or lose, all those DPs are not lacking in work offers.

With all due respect, please don't state your opinion as fact.
Plenty of people disagree with you, including the cinematography branch of the Academy, which is why it was nominated in the first place - by both the Academy and The ASC, I might add.

Opinion stated as fact is one of my pet peeves, so apologies in advance if this comes off as harsh or rude.

That being said, I do agree it's hard to point to one and say it's "better", since that's so subjective - but that's awards for you.

Yes it is very hard to judge a renoir vs a rembrandt for best painting. Especially when they are hired to paint that painting based on script or pre determined/ semi determined design. So i wouldn't imagine the oscars being far from that. Deakins is a legend, and can focus that raw human nature of the script and characters into his images. And I would love to see him win more then any of the other DP's. But I think that Social Network or Inception will win based on what they did for the craft and for their stories. We will have to wait and see how it all pans out.

In either case congrats to them ALL for beautiful work and great pictures.
