Japan...

Its totally nuts. As a fellow engineer maybe you can understand how insane it is to have nuclear reactors without fool proof fail safe systems? I'm no nuclear engineer but somehow it doesn't seem safe to built reactors near a fault line.

The reactors are doing well for coping with at least seven times the magnitude of earthquake they were designed for and then having a tsunami half a metre bigger than what was expected...

But why are people worrying about a nuclear reactor which has plenty of containment mechanisms that will stop any significant radiation releases, when so many people have been killed by (and countless others are are still actually being affected by) the earthquake and tsunami?

For me now is the time to pause and to give compassion to the people in Japan.

It is time to think about whether we are on the right path and what we could change in our live.

Thinking of friends in Japan

Thinking of friends in Japan

My thoughts and prayers are with the people in Japan!

Condolences to the victims of the earthquake and to those who have lost loved ones.

The focus of all of us during this time must be with the people of Japan and the hardships and heartbreak with which they must deal. This is not the time to enter into discussions of, or push barrows on, political agendas. The time will come for that later, I'm sure. Right now, let's think about the Japanese people.

The reactors were all built to be earthquake resistant with a bunch of safeguards and containment systems ( which seem to have worked pretty well so far ) ... but a 8.9 is pretty hard for anything to stand up to.

Indeed they have done well.

Reactor one is 40 years old, built before the more stringent earthquake architecture and was due to be decommissioned this month. It has been shut down. Reactor 3 may have 'exploded' but the reactor and casing are fine according to reports, it was just the external building that popped. Pretty well prepared if you ask me, if they can be pumping sea water in within hours to cool things down.

There are some things in life you just cannot plan for. Japan's shore line has moved by 8 feet as a result of this earthquake. Nature sure has a way of letting us know who's boss.

Japan rose from the ashes of Hiroshima and Nagasaki to become a world powerhouse. They did it before, they can do it again. It's been my experience that Japanese people are deeply patriotic and their sense of honour runs through everything they do. Their hearts might be breaking right now but they will make it out the other side.

I've been living in Japan for 10 years, most of that time in Tokyo. Big fan of RED and future Scarlet owner.

I just wanted to say thank you to Mr. Jannard for starting this thread and to all the others who have expressed their good wishes.

Thank you.

Been in Tokyo a few times and really like the country and the people there...
As long as it is possible I'll support the people by spending my holidays over there, so I hope the atomic power plant issue don't get really worse (the damage of the earthquake and tsunami can be repaired - a atomic fallout -> not!)...

Just to mention;
I'm a big fan of japanese music - and I also buy digital japanese releases online.
My main source hearjapan.com decided to donate 50% of the revenue directly to japanese relief effort!

Info: http://www.hearjapan.com/news/hearj...ate_50_of_all_sales_to_Japanese_relief_effort

Other than that I can't do anything at the moment... But I'm thinking of donating more money later on since I already organize concerts of japanese artists here in my country. Too bad I'm not making any money with that currently (it's ahobby) but maybe I can rise some funds in the future by continuing with it...

I send my best wishes to all affected people!

Some of my family was in Japan when it hit, so this one was way too close to home even though it happened on the other side of the world. Fortunately, they are all safe.

Heartfelt wishes to all the families and people affected by the situation.

It's all so heartbreaking. I'm headed out this week with a disaster relief team made up of men from the North Carolina Baptist State Convention. I'll be shooting a documentary of their work. (no not on my RED...I wish...but have to travel a little lighter so I'm shooting on 7D...since I don't have my epic yet :o)

I would appreciate it if you guys kept all of us in your prayers that we will be able to accomplish good work and also because it is still quite dangerous over there.

Jeremiah

The magnitude of this disaster just boggles my mind. When I see the photos and videos, I can't get my head around the amount of destruction and how fast it all happened. Watching those huge ships get tossed around like toys is unbelievable. My thoughts and prayers are with the Japanese and all who are affected by this horrific situation. And I am so in awe of the strength of the Japanese culture and people, who are preserving order, civility and lawfulness in the face of this disaster.

Good for you Jeremiah. That's the right idea. Right now is the time to spend a little time praying for the people of Japan, and send a little money to help them, and go help if you can.

And thanks to Jim for reminding all of us of life's true priorities. Coming from the head with these thoughts is an excellent precedent.

I hope your a SAR team or paramedics?

Sad indeed, at times we are truly to be Humbled by the Brute Force of Nature, but like wise we are to be so from the connection and
support that Humanity gives each other in moment like this were anything one can do always helps.

Truly from the heart wish every one there Strength, not for what has happened but for what they have ahed of them.

Really tragic. I admire the courage and discipline of Japan citizens and hope that they would not have to deal with nuclear leaks as well. By the way, is there some R1 footage of this terrible events?
