  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

I agree with the big J, compression really compromises the really nice work.

What compression, codec is that running on now?

EDIT: this open for me at 800, hence the more than usual artifacting. going to 400 was better. still very nice, very high tray!!

The compression sucks no doubt.
I will request for higher resolution outputs come monday, and it just came out a few days ago. So i am sure there will be better versions of compression out soon.

Some details on the shoot.

2 REDs 1 build 15 & 1 build 16 because we had problems with a 2nd camera and had to trade out so it was traded to a build 15.
Sucked but it was the only option at that moment in time.
That made Color correction and transcodeing that much more work.
RED lens 50-150
and
Ziess superspeeds if memory severs me right.
4 RED drives 22 CF cards.

Two 17 hour days
and
One 10 hour day.
1 day of trouble shooting in post.

This video does not do justice on how talented Janelle Monae is.
I have never seen a girl dance as awesome as her. Especially at hour 13 of shoot she still had 110% juice.
She reminds me of Michael Jackson when he was the Moon Walker in the 80s and early 90s

WOW that is an amazing video. Matt Garrett and I watched it like 5 times in awe while sitting exhausted from shoot in hotel lobby.

Such a great combo of performance, prod design, dp skills, editing, music.

Quick question - what framerate did you shoot at / do post speed-up at? I am assuming that most of it is sped up a little bit, just interested how much.

BTW, not to take anything away from her performance, she is a great dancer.

Also, more details, please! Lighting setup, jib used, etc... anyway, great job man.

Even due to the compression, the video looks awesome.

The music is cool as well....and especially the peformance original, even the drummer is well edited for this kind of music when you wouldn't expect this as the most important.
