  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Jaguar XK8 on the EPIC

Jens Jakob Thorsen gave me a clip around the ear on shutter speeds. So I have him to thank for the clarity. But thanks for taking the time to watch and comment.

Hi Brett,

Great job. I'm curious what challenges you ran into with shutter speed? Can you elaborate?

Thanks

Dave

I wasn't sticking to speeds relative to my frames per-second. I had some bad DSLR habits. Jens pointed them out. If you're shooting 25fps, you 'should' be at a shutter speed of 50. This is a more filmic look, which is, next to depth of field, what we're all after.

I am really digging these shorts you are putting up. Incredible image quality with the canon glass!

Congrats on this short! Very nice, clean loved the lighting!

I think this looks great. I wish you didnt use that much DOF while shooting the car. You would have benefited from having a 24-70 or maybe a 15mm fisheye for those shots.
Could you please elaborate on the shutter issues?
Coming from a dslr background myself, I wonder if i have the same bad habits.

Good point Mohamed. I need to pull back on my depth-of-field thing and be a bit more loyal to the product. I don't know about the fisheye though bro. I'm re-shooting this job Monday as the Client wants to change up the message, so I will re-do at a sharper aperture. My 16-35 comes back from the lens hospital so I might try that.
The shutter issues: here's a good post my colleague Christian Fitzpatrick shared with me after Jens had identified my problem. [/TD]

The Client reckons it is an XK8. Paul even mentions it in the script. You reckon its an XK? How can you tell? Just interested.

From 1996-2006 it was the XK8 and XKR, normally-aspirated and supercharged. 2006-Present they're called the XK and XKR. You can see it on the car's name badge in your video, on Wikipedia, on the website of the client's own dealership, and of course, on the official Jaguar Australia website.

He's just calling it by the previous generation car's name, a hard habit to break after selling the XK8 for 10 years!

Hey Brett absolutely love the interior close up of the salesman/talent. I do like the soft edges on the exteriors of the car but I would definitely like to see one or two non soft edge wide shots to use the resolution advantage of the Epic to show the intricate detail of the car. Also I would probably go for a more bluish/coldish color temperature and tint on the exterior shots to match the interior excellent shot better in tone- this is just a personal preference, though. Nice dynamic editing, love the " turning on" of the lights and the detail shots of the car, looks "expensive", as it should!

Hey thanks Sergio. We had to do a re-shoot on this piece today as the Client wanted to add some more bits and I nailed some pin-sharp shots without being a depth-of-field wanker. Funnily enough, my white balance was down to 3,700 and I'm lighting with neon panels. Any lower and Paul will start looking like a corpse. ;-)

I think this is better than the first attempt. I see you used some old shots but I'm also loving the new sharper shots of the car.
Good work man.
