Just heard a legend of Cinematography and a fine gentelman Jack Cardiff passed away today.
Jack painted with light; his work on Black Narcissus and The Red Shoes was amazing.

RIP Mr Cardiff.

"Cardiff re-wrote the rules of cinematography, bringing a painter's eye to the craft. Indeed, he cited Rembrandt, Vermeer, Van Gogh and Caravaggio as inspirations for the light and colour of Black Narcissus"

Very sad indeed...an absolute legend of British cinema (not to mention a really nice guy by all accounts). Probably one of the few cinematographers in the world that could make the national news upon passing away...what a legend!

What a great cinematographer. His work with Powell and Pressburger, and many others, was incredible.

Very sad - "A Matter of Life & Death" is still one of my faves.

Always loved Cardiff, when I first saw "The Vikings" at the age of 6, it was the first time I realized what cinematography was and what it "did" for a movie. It was really a visceral experience for me and what really inspired me to pick up a camera. I owe my first jolt and cinematography bug bite to Cardiff, much the same way many others owe theirs to other DP's, but for me, Jack Cardiff will always hold that special place. RIP Maestro!

Cardiff's work is truly inspirational. Black Narcissus and Tales of Hoffmann are mindblowing visual experiences. If you have a chance, check out his commentary track on the British PAL DVD of A Matter of Life and Death. Mesmerizing stuff, not to be missed.
