  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

IzzY - 2/3rds Scarlet with 100mm RED PRO PRIME

The fixed 8x lens is a no excuse optical design. The image quality will be incredible. Given that it is autofocus and manual, it will not have an infinity stop in manual focus mode, although it is set up for gearing. We have a VERY new way to "fly by wire focus" for the fixed zoom that all will appreciate. It is the magic of that lens (along with the resolution).

The miniRED primes are manual only and are incredibly sharp and compact, only slightly larger than a robust C-mount lens.

Just what I needed to hear. Thank you.

I think these 2/3 cameras will be more ideal than any 35 cam for cinema work.

I was wondering, how do these lenses handle flare?
(I particularly like flare)

And I have to say, for being a smaller sized lens and with a T-Stop of 5.6, the DOF is amazing on that thing.

Yeah I've noticed that too. The question is what is the enlargement or what is the real size of Izzy (as we know the sensor size).

Anyway this looks very good.

cheers,
antoine.

antoine.. in 3 words.. cinema is not hollywood

edit
hey said 3?.. :)

Drat! every time I think "No, I can't afford Scarlet, have to look for something cheaper" you guys do something like this  . Aargh, more bank-balance abuse coming !
David

Wondering why do you think that?

Thanks,
antoine.

Well, for just about every shot on the typical 35 film, the lens is stopped down to allow adequate control of Dof. In fact, gigantic lighting setups are contrived to provide enough light to maintain the lower aperture with a nice ISO. That is not the whole story, but essentially T2.4 on 2/3 Scarlet will give just the right amount of Dof to match that look, while having amazing low light ability that is not possible at slower 35. In other words, it opens up a whole new avenue for independent films in ambient light with no focus puller needed. It will be a new 'natural' style with pleasing Dof. On top of that, a 3k workflow is much easier to handle than 5k, and will be just enough for a perfect 2k D-cinema finish. Note that the Scarlet's digital 3k will be equivalent in color richness and resolution to a 35 print, most likely better. (the main benefit of 35 film over 16 was actually image quality, not dof) Also, 150fps burst and ramping can't be beat. (untill the much more expensive Epic, of course) But those cameras invite tedious big budget approaches, and the 2/3 Scarlet will really allow us to defy that and maintain the same top notch quality.

Consider that the following image was f5 at portrait focal length on a 's35' DX camera. That is right about a T2.4 on the fixed Scarlet.

You guys, I am so extremely excited for these scarlets. I can't wait to start creating with these. "Filmic" DOF, Hi-res, High quality, Great color depth... and under the average "competing" camera budget.
I shall name my 2/3 fixed, Johanson. :D

Izzy Moving..... ( Heavily Compressed)

Quick and dirty.. if its choppy ( busy server ) let it load through once then play again.

I'm sure it's just a compression issue or server overload (though I let it load several times before judging it.). But does anyone else see that pixel banding and shuddering going on in the very back right of the movie where Izzy's sides are moving in and out? Just curious. I know you said not to judge these to carefully. But I'm just wondering if thats some weird compression thing or what.

The moving footage of Izzy looks great! The fixed Scarlet will cost me less than I paid for my last 16mm film transfer so I'm really happy to see the work you are doing to bring the best quality in image capture to all filmmakers at a "rental" price. I've been wishing for a camera like Scarlet and look forward to working with her : )

I can almost guarantee that's a compression issue. You can tell.

Phenomenal...not only way better than any other camera in its price range but somehow superior to 2/3" cameras costing 50 times more!!??

This makes me think: How am I going to use a FF on the fixed Scarlet?

:detective2:

I'll have to buy a "module" to FF-by-wire then, I presume...

Edit: Just noticed that FLY-BY-WIRE is listed on the fixed Scarlet specs, so I guess it must come in the package... My bad. :)

I would think it will be harder to use a FF on the RED mini-primes when they are released - judging by the renders, I'm not sure you could attach a FF to something that small.

Will there be an issue attaching a FF given the fact that the lenses are so much higher than the base of the camera?

Can we still expect the 'wide' and 'tele' adapters for the fixed lens Scarlet?

Good question. But I'm guessing the answer is most likely, absolutely! I don't see any reason why they would nix the high quality converters from their lineup just because their initial lens is very high quality too... it still doesn't cover the focal range that those adapters would. Besides, add-ons is where the bulk of money is made.
