  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

it's true, scarlet-x is just a starterdrug...

I've directed a ton of projects on RED M, MX, Epic, and now putting my Scarlet to good use. i have to say guys, for all of you that have not recieved your Scarlet yet, im betting it will meet 95 if not 99 percent of all your needs. It truely is a liberating and fun camera to shoot with. I thought I would miss the slow mo options, but I have shot a decent amount with micro 4/3rd cameras that were hacked as b and c cameras on shoots and the 3k is exactly the same so you there really is very little decernable DOF change when going to slow mo. It has also resparked the flame for 48 fps. I had all but forgotten that there is such a cinematic and floaty... almost ghostly feel to the 48fps slo mo. Really cinematic compared to the nutso sports oriented "lets see that in slow motion," high fps. All that being said Epic is amazing and im convinced I will rent it again in the future for certain projects, but as far as ownership the scarlet is a steal.

I decided to go with the Scarlet now and buy all the add on and accessories .. ie matt box, filters, rail system, v mount battery system and a little more glass. I can then just rent an Epic Brain when I need one or purchase when the right project comes along.

Yeah, it was tempting, I'm not even sure I would've committed to it. I am developing a glass fetish right now...I think I want to invest in glass, mounts and the Dragon upgrade.

I think anyone who has "settled" for scarlet just needs to remember they have a camera that can shoot feature film. I still can't believe I'd ever say that I'd have a camera that can do that. A scarlet will meet 90% of most people needs. The 300fps and the higher redcode are amazing but not crucial to have.

The epic may seem super expensive, but I remember dropping 30k on two HVX200's and p2 cards. They are pretty worthless now. I've shot on 5d's for the past two years and I've joked that they are so cheap they are disposable (yet they have yet to break). I can see using a single scarlet or epic as my main camera and then using one one of the Canon 4k DSLR as a back up.

Norbert...are you going to keep your Scarlet or just re-sell it once it comes in since you bought an EPIC?

matt, i will keep the scarlet. with having two bodies i can offer two different rent packages, depending on customers budget. and i can also rent out a package with two bodies because of the perfect modularity :-)
