GoPro + Red + BMD turned this world upside down in the last few days. Technology has been around for ages now, but Canon and Sony decided to not release it so they can profit at our expense. Now, their own existence is at a lonely crossroad because of bad business decisions. Like it should be.
You think I am overstating? I think I am actually understating! They may actually already be dead! Jannard just shot them in the head with a shotgun last night! I am not sure they will actually survive to be honest!

The game Sony and Canon have played for so many years is finally over. They can either release the technology or join other companies that went bankrupt and forgotten over night. Mark my words. If their executives do not have a major change of consciousness (= better business strategies) before December 21st of this year, their end will be inevitable and short coming.

What will be the result of this? It will be less than a year before 85+% of the market is shooting proress or better as the affordable standard. Like it should be. Current crappy codecs are a scam and we know it. We are guilty as charged for using them everyday when we know there is better but we do not demand it with our choices of purchase.

BMD + Red + GoPro are true examples that if you can release the best technology you can produce at the best price you can manufacture and still profit, then you have a logical and ethical business practice that will inevitably succeed.

The end is here. It will be a bitter end for many, it will be a beautiful beginning for many. The difference to each one of us will be in our consciousness. I want to be on the bright side and I ask Sony, Canon and you to join.

How? Wait six months. Do not buy cameras with crappy codecs in the mean time. Ask for Proress or better. Be vocal in outlets like this. Dont cry if Canon and Sony die, but applaud BMD + GoPro & Red for showing us that every end marks a new beginning.

Talking about crapy codec, you should put Prores in that category aswell.
Just saying.
Good luck to you, hope you'll find the bright side.

it's really not true what you're saying. I have a c300 and shoot ALOT more on it then on my epic. And thats because of the "crappy" codec, built in nd, no fan noise, long battery life and quite reasonable picture quality. Red is just one part of the market, but doesn't work for a lot of shootings situations. Canon made a much better camera for documentary and i enjoy it everyday. So red is just not the solution to everything, remembers that, it's not all about specs...

Sony may suck about a lot of things but they are far from dead. They are gigantic. That one division even if it fell on it's face isn't likely to bring the entire house down. But what do I know about such things?

Prores a crappy codec??!?! Not sure about that- Drive looked great from the Alexa (imdb states prores 4:4:4). Give me R3d raw anyday however 4k prores REDlogFilm looks stunning with plenty of room to move and play it back on any current mac. Different tools for different workflows- whatever works(and looks) best.

I think you should re-read your post? Sony & Canon 'dead'?

I would wait until February, when Sony announces prices, before counting them out. They've surprised people before, including pricing the F65 at about 1/3 the price of their previous model, the F35.

Sony's new camera is no joke. Global shutter, good DR plus proprietary glass. Most films are not finished at 4k yet so 4k is more than enough. Yes it needs some stuff to make it work - so does the epic - but RAW is not popular with producers who don't like paying transcode fees for edits. Time will tell but I can see myself buying one if the pictures from it are good. I look forward to zero jello images personally. Sony is far from out of the game and, as we know, animals and corporations are at their most dangerous when threatened. Sony spotted what Red was unwilling to do: ie: global shutter and ran with it. Plus they way I'm feeling about Red's current strategy right now, I'd feel pretty good about throwing some money Sony's direction.

The new additions to Sony top end cameras are great and welcomed. Will they be able to compete against dragon quality and pricing? Time will tell. Competition is good for all of us.
Anything else Sony and Canon have below Sony's F5 is absolute garbage. The fact that the Canon C300, Sony F3 and all others are expensive and popular does not make them good cameras. Any codec you can not do a proper color grade is a crappy codec and therefore a crappy camera. Period.
Jannard gets it and I honor that. We are in 2012. Mankind has amazing technology. The fact that we are still shooting shitty codecs (on Sony and Canon cameras) and paying too much for them is absolutely wrong and an insult to human intelligence.

Mark has a widget that scans for "ProRes" and "Module" in the forum. And each time it successfully finds something a RED ALERT alarm goes off wherever he is at.
