Activating "fanboy mode"... this post will contain no useful information whatsoever outside of blatant gushing. You've been warned.
So I was thinking the other day about how much I'm looking forward to Epic, and started wondering why. I think it's because I honestly can't think of anything that I want this camera to do that it doesn't already. Let's see...
Higher-than-film resolution, check.
Large sensor, check.
Awesome native dymanic range, check.
True High-Framerate, check.
Negligible rolling shutter effect, check.
Ultimate post flexibility, check.
Game-changing motion HDR, check.
Blow-your-mind small and light package, check.
Modularity to fit your production's needs, check.
All backed by a company committed to doing the right thing, check.
Seriously, what else can you ask for? I guess maybe if I was picky I'd say full-frame sensor and a global shutter. Maybe a passive cooling instead of fans, but those're just nice-to-haves. In truth, this thing has literally everything I want in a dream camera, without any compromises that I can think of.
So thanks, Jim & Co. for breaking from the norm. You've pushed film as an art one (or several) step closer toward democratization. For a long time now, film as been an art form with one of the highest barrier of entry due to cost. DV gave us access, but at the cost of technical quality (defined primarily as resolution, dynamic range, and post flexibility) but now we can check that off the list. Five to ten years from now, I think we'll finally be able to get to a point where anyone who really wants to shoot a compelling drama can do so without having to make a compromise in technical image quality. I don't think we'll ever get to a point where it's as accessible as a paint brush and canvas is for painters, but we can come close, maybe just a little higher than photography close. And I predict that Red will go down in history as the one of the prime enablers.
