  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

It's all RED's fault.

I liked this one from the ad:

Morning Martin,

I take it that a SD lens stands for standard definition. Does this camera require a specific type lens for some optical reason to work properly? Or can you use a SD lens and still achieve a high resolution image from the camera?

RED killed the video stars !

RED killed the video stars !

I think the fault of quick obsolescence is equal beetween Red and the Canon DSLR wave. And with a Sony Alpha A1000 at NAB (maybe) and a new Canon video pro cam (more sure)... and the RED Scarlet (100% sure), the weather will be icy for old fashionned pro cam...

Sony Alpha 1000 HD-DSLR is the new buzz ... but who knows...

"..This will be a revolutionary camera, basically a DSLR video camera hybrid..." taken from here..

I see. The more I read about the varicam the more I would like to have this unit in the ad just for commercials etc. The lens and studio handles cost more then the asking price. lol It be fun to let the students at SOC here in Ashland use it for their video projects. I know that would require a edit bay for this format but after working at UCLA for five years I've found where there is a will there is a way.

That camera was 70K just two years ago.

Recently I shot some new interviews for a piece that needed to be updated. The new renders to 720P HD from RED (the codec that Varicam shoots) side by side with the varicam, looked better than the Varicam camera originals. Bingo. It just really got beat on image quality.

The varicam was a great camera and the first real 24P film stle capture and high speed camera that was very easy to use.

Then RED came along and wel.....

Actually no. The VariCam in this sale is a 27V, which was the original model back almost a decade ago. Then came the VariCam 27F and finally the 27H. Many people didn't know the difference, but there were definite improvements in performance. And I think the VariCam was down around $40K when it was finally discontinued.

Actually the Sony F900 was the first 24P camera, the Varicam came out a year or so later. But the Varicam could do 60P, which the F900 could not.

That A1000 rumor is totally false. It has already been proven that the rumor was sourced from a forum member that has a history of posting rumors based only on his personal speculation rather than actual inside sources. Expect an alpha DSLR with a video function like the 5D but not a RED competitor (which Sony is working on, but it has nothing to do with the Alpha line). The fake Sony roadmap is totally illogical and states that the A850 will be discontinued this year having been out for only a couple of months. Also 32mp FF is still a ways off. Wait for more cameras is the 24mp range before we see another big resolution jump. I expect the Scarlet system to go unchallenged at NAB this year. Sony will make Alpha announcements at photokina, not NAB.

To answer the original question.

Yes. I think RED has had an impact on the value of any Varicam model.

The only thing RED does not do is shoot to tape but Jay A. Kelly would argue with me on that. :)

David.
