  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

It Was Inevitable -- RMDs not Saved Prior to FCPX Import

Hey Everyone,

Is there a quick/easy way to get FCPX (in this case 10.0.8) and RCXp to cross-talk RMD changes if the RMDs weren't created prior to being imported? That is to say, is there a way to make it work without having to re-import (or re-conform)? Even if I have to drag/drop RMDs or create links to RMDs manually... I just want to be able to batch modify the raw data (based on scene), but unfortunately, half the footage had RMDs before import and the other have didn't... it's a bit cluster****...

And no, it wasn't me that caused the fubar, I'm merely trying to put out the fire... All searches lead to the same "just save your RMDs beforehand" type tuts.

Maybe try to adjust the R3D settings in FCPX this should create RMDs which you could then replace with the original ones...

Yeah, but then it would be a nightmare of replacing files if an adjustment is needed.

What kind of adjustment do you mean? I can usually switch back and forth with RCX and FCPX RMD changes.

I just want all of my RCX changes to be updated (real-time style) on the FCPX timeline. This *is* possible when you save the RMDs prior to importing to FCPX, but I got to this project late and I'm now trying to manage it in the most effective way possible.

Yep, it's possible. Point Red Cine at your final cut event, and edit the RMD files there.

Note that in some cases it seems like FCPX caches these pretty aggresively when the RMD is stored in the event (instead of linking to the pre-existing one on import)

So whenever this happens to me, I just quit/relaunch FCP X to see changes - or sometimes have to open the R3d controls in the media info tab and "revert to original camera values" (Which are now the settings in the RMD you've edited in red cine).

When I point RCX to Final Cut Events>Day1>Original Media folder (which is where the FCPX alias files and .rmds are) nothing show up. There are a lot of synchronized clips and I'm starting to think something is afoul. Quite a few clips are NOT allowing me to change the settings within FCPX either... and alias files point to nothing (even though FCPX displays both proxy and raw clips), and whenever I go to "fix alias" I get a "Unexpected Error Code -36" when trying to link the actual RMD...

Haggard.

I'm not sure if this little python script I wrote last year still works or not, but it's worth a shot. Just make sure you have backups :) This was written back before they changed the project/event layouts in FCP-X.

https://github.com/glimberg/fcpx_rmd_relinker/blob/master/fcpx_rmd_relink.py

You'll have to run it from the terminal.

To use, run: python /path/to/fcpx_rmd_relink.py source_dir event_dir

source_dir Path to your .RDC directories
event_dir Path to the FCP Event directory

Note that this script was written by me and not RED. RED offers no support for this script. Just wanted to throw it out there if it can help.

Holy jebus, I'm just seeing those last two posts now; thank you Grant, I'm gonna try it as soon as I get the drives back. Ironically, we kept a copy of 10.0.8 on our system for fear that upgrading to 10.1 would cause huge headaches for this particularly project. So it likely has a better shot of working!

@patrick; no it wasn't resolved (there was no way to do it), but I'm going to try Grant's script and see what happens. Soo... fingers crossed (I'll probably know in the next couple weeks.)

Please improove the rmd management in RCx-pro.
Copy rmd from master rushes to the dub rushes is quite cumbersome. I do it by changing a framing parameter and reverting it to refresh the rmd directory. Quind of strange workaround. We should be able to choose this by "newer Rmd files" or pointing it to an "update folder" or by date...

Damn, I just "lost" the RMD link between FCPX and RCX. This is damn weird. I don't know why it happened. I'm guessing it was a quick image check within Resolve which killed the FCPX-RCX links if that is at all possible.

I lost the spatial conform "fill" setting in some files and now the RMDs are not shared anymore. It worked before with the same exact files and now I can't find a way to fix it! If I try to just replace with an alias, fcpx creates it's own RMD.

Grant, thank you very much. Sadly this didn't seemingly start at all.
Can you tell me if there is a way to fix the problem by hand?
