Issues when using RedVolts anyone?

Hi guys,

I've noticed that my Epic randomly shuts down when I'm running the RedVolts in the side handle. Most times this happens when the belt clip battery running an Anton Bauer gets below 10 volts. The camera used to switch over to the redvolt in the side handle on its own, now it just shuts down (improperly). I then re-fire it back up with just the redvolt and it works ok, but after a few minutes shuts down improperly again. The redvolt is not drained and the time before shut down varies.

Anyone had similar issues? I'm running the latest firmware.

Thank you in advance.

Nick

Paul, oh no! Was it the side handle that was damaged and cost to repair or the actual brain? Its very possible as all my shooting is outdoors and in harms way. Were there any tell-tale signs of damage which I could check?

Thank you,

Nick

Even worse, my original RED came that way and they had to upgrade the body because it was a brain malfunction. Luckily it was brand new so it was still under warranty.

God! I'm getting scared now. I hadn't had this issue before. Had the Epic for over a year now. Seems to have just started. I did upgrade the firmware last month but didn't notice this issue until last week.

Any more thoughts? Anything I can do to test / diagnose? Thanks so much guys,

Nick

I was on a racing yacht in the 'hot seat' at the back, during a race in a monsoon. Despite being in a splash bag some seawater drained in via the strap and the side handle went dead. After a couple of days it dried out but it's been unreliable ever since. I sent it in with my Dragon upgrade and the repair cost is for the side handle only.

Nick have you tried other batteries or red volts? I recall you live in Belleville but if you're up for driving over to Toronto, we can test with my red volts and v-mount batteries. Hopefully it's not the brain that's causing issues.

You need to narrow down the culprits. Swapping Redvolts and components with known good ones from other users is a great way.

But even with your existing kit, you can fully charge all your Redvolts, and then monitor the voltage on the power menu and see how long each lasts - that will highlight if any/all of your Redvolts are working correctly. A new fully charged Redvolt will often display a lower than 100% display, but should last 25 to 30 minutes with just the 5" Touch LCD attached.

Assuming you have at least one good Redvolt - put that in your Side Handle and power up. Open up the power menu and then plug in your belt battery. The camera should swap to the belt battery automatically, and it should show up on the power menu. Now disconnect the belt battery, and the camera should swap back to the Side Handle Redvolt without powering down. If it shuts down, then it could be either a camera and/or a Side Handle problem, or a firmware problem.

If a fresh firmware install of the latest Release Build doesn't cure it, then contact Red Support. I suspect at that stage you will have to send in BOTH your camera and Side Handle for diagnosis/repair.
