  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

ISO vs Exposure adjustment

In RedcineX (or other raw access), raw R3D files.

I know Iso is a step adjustment, and exposure is 0.001 micro adjustments.
Is there any difference in the way they adjust the image? Like FLUT vs ISO. Or are they the same thing?

In other terms, is it the same if I go from iso 800 to iso 1600 vs adding 1.000 exposure?
 
In the current system, ISO is the primary gain adjustment. ISO is adjusted in such a way as to avoid hard clipping. FLUT are small adjustments in gain, calibrated in stops. Just like ISO they avoid hard clipping. ISO and FLUT are essentially the same, but on different scales and their gains combine together. ISO800 +1 FLUT is the exact same as ISO1600 for instance. The exposure control works identically for the most part, but can cause hard clip.

In linear light export via EXR, ISO, FLUT and Exposure all work the same because there's no clipping in the float format.

Hi Graeme,

that's perfect. I thought FLUT was the only one preventing clipping, and I am happy to know that ISO is behaving similar.
I am going to write another post later on about the approach that I was having with ISO, related to the dragon and helium. And I wanted to make sure I was not writing anything bad.

PS looking forward to the new color pipeline...:)
 
Thanks! This behaviour will change slightly with the new pipeline, but I'll document that once it's all in place so you'll know exactly what's going on.
