Hey guys,

just off hand what is a safe ISO to shoot before seeing noise in lowlight ? It will be a well lit scene with m18 and 2x red heads + 1 skypannel with a soft box ? I would like to shoot somewhere around t3-t4 at 640iso ? any feedback ?

Steven

For best results:
1. Have the camera running for a few minutes before shooting so it gets up to temperature.
2. Make sure both temps are in the green zone.
3. Potentially even do a black shade to minimize noise as much as possible.
4. Try to go to as low of an ISO as possible. ISO 500/640 and lower shouldn’t be too grainy, ISO 800 you’ll generally start to have it be more noticeable, and once you push up into ISO 1000 and higher it’ll start to become really grainy.
5. Shoot contrast into the scene so you can pull the darker (grainy) parts of the scene down and minimize grain.

In addition to the things above, Neat Video is a really great plugin for grain removal. There’s a few threads on it here on Reduser and it’s got a free trial. It is $99.99 USD though, so if you aren’t fighting grain often or don’t have it in the budget to get it for these shots, you’d be better off to go with the contrast route and have room to minimize any of that grain that way.

As for t3-t4, you should be good since it sounds like you’ll have a good amount of light for the scene.
