  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

ISO / histogram

Not sure what James is asking precisely, but if the question is why the ISO setting does not change the readout of the historgram, the answer is, because the exposure should not depend on the setting of the display but instead only on the amount of light on the sensor.

Thanks. Factory preset is 800 ISO, but I have read somewhere about a native 320 ISO. Any wisdom? What are most folks using for reference?

This is my take on it...
I think RED prefer you shoot at 800asa... reason is that it will give you a stop extra to save yourself incase you over expose. It's like a mini insurance policy. and a good one for people that don't really take note of there high lights during a shot.

I prefer shooting at 320 because it gives me a cleaner image... but I'm always making sure there is info in every part of my shot before I press the record button.

At the end of the day, it does not matter which one you favour. You still going to get a good solid image regardless. :)))

Take Mark's advice and test. By setting your ISO to 320 you leave little or no room for highlight protection, but flipping between RAW and your look file is almost identical from an exposure perspective.

I leave the camera set to 320ISO 5000K for just about everything and I throw it all away the moment I get into RCX to make way for REDCOLR2 and REDLOG FILM and then I set looks from there.

IN this way I feel I am seeing what the sensor sees and I can prtect the highlights with filters or the aperture instead of rating one stop under at 800ISO.

What ever each person chooses is right for them, but I find that this gives me the least number of surprises in post because I'm essentially viewing RAW all the time.

Looks can be created for sexier monitoring paths for clients, and external monitoring, but the RAW VIEW is essentially 320ISO and a color balance of 5000Kelvin (closer to daylight than tungsten)

Hope this helps...

David
