  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Iso 6000 - mx straight outta da box

Nice results with high ISO but I was wishing M-X would resolve (in any way) the bad split image effect when used with strobe lights...

Cool footage!

I am not sure i would have rented my RED1 to that shoot if i knew that all those lasers would fire in all directions!! :-D

Very, very cool. Even better it was all in camera.

But seriously Zak, have you checked your brand new sensor for laser damage!!

Zak,

This is such beautiful work. I really love the look and the addition of skeleton puppet is really cool. (somebody really knows how towork that puppet). The lighting is wonderful and I love the (burnt hole in the snare?) very cool.

I love finding this kind of creative work done in camera. Just wonderful.

These lasers are not that powerful. They split the beam so many times to get that many copies of it, I have a hard time believing it could damage the sensor.

hey Zak - kick ass video. any chance you'd unlock it so we can send it around? it's worth being seen.

OK let's address this. We NEVER want that to go away, and when you see it in this vid, it is on purpose.

Why do you like that? I mean that seriously, as I just want to understand the benefit you like from it. When I shoot with a rolling shutter, at events where people are shooting cameras and flashes are going off, the location of the line switches around depending on when the flash went off relative to the capture rate. It always looks bad to me when reviewing the video.

I can see how it works in this video, I'm just thinking of other issues where your aren't going for awesome crazy optical tomfoolery! :)

Wow. This is amazing! I can't believe this is all done optically. You sir, have talent. I've been watching it over and over again to try and figure out how you actually did some of the effects.

Can't wait for the full video.

I agree to, it looks so surreal with the skeleton too. Also, that last shot in the preview with the laser hitting all the surfaces was amazing.

I like the shot through the piece of broken glass!

Props dude, I try to do as much in camera as possible, it just looks different, not better than post effects but different.

For the most part, these effects are easy to do with some creativity. As I stated, it looks like he is shooting through some things like broken glass, possibly acrylic, shining lights at the corners of the lenses for flares (Star Trek Style) and using a fast shutter speed to make it more "stroby". Other than that, it is all in the lighting/lasers.

Jim has already addressed this. The current beta builds do not have the read/reset at full speed yet. The current build has it running at the same speed as the regular M sensor. Once they get all the tweaks down they will speed it up so this issue should go away as MX should operate at 5ms which is 1ms slower than film. I believe it is currently at 8ms or 9ms, I think Jim or Jarred could chime in here.

I don't see how this will fix this issue. As long as there is no global shutter, there is ALWAYS the possibility of a flash happening during that 5ms read/reset cycle. If you are cycling through all the rows and at 2.5ms the flash goes off, it will be present on that part of the rows and onward only.
