Too much or too little...

Too much or too little...

It seems too often when shooting you end up with too much or too little light when shooting in natural or location settings. That's one major reason that big filmmakers like Stanley Kubrick shot The Shining (1980) and Full Metal Jacket (1987) "exteriors" in the studio, so the light and lighting ratios could be controlled. Part of the beauty of studio films over location shooting is their having less wind and more consistent lighting.

You still need to use an "eye light" and some fill or bounce board even with HDR being used to be cinematic on the final grade.

"Exposure" is more than just adjusting the camera settings like shutter angle, and the lens iris and optical filters. Exposure is the total process of adjusting the light on the sensor's pixels, so it includes lighting, the use of flags and snoots, time of day, weather, and makeup and costume design as well as paint colors and selection of set dressing and camera angles to control specular reflections...
