  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Is this the last Camera to Buy?

I have a Scarlet X and I love the damn thing. Most stuff I shoot is on 4K and I just returned from Rwanda with some amazing footage. Camera technology really helps, but ultimately is what you put in front of it that will make a difference. Needless to say hiring is not where my business lies, so it is solely for our own productions.

I would like at some point to upgrade to an Epic brain, but for the price I would probably just take the higher frame rate path, as opposed to the dynamic range path. The Scarlet X is a pretty good low light performer with a good enough fast lens. There are tools out there to ensure noise is minimal or negligible. So in other words, I am content, happy thus far. I know I can turn around great films with great production values.

One thing I might buy is a pocket cinema Blackmagic camera for the odd shot where that style of work may fit in, or for a quick run and gun. Not sure about the 4K camera though. It has a single aspect ratio (3.8K), doesn't shoot higher than 30fps and no one is actually mentioning how much space RAW will take using your SSD drives. If ProRes HQ4K takes 36 minutes out of a 240GB SSD card, is a no go, purely based on data v storage.

Umm I'm sure many a person said....WOW...Horse AND cart.....awesome man, I can get from point A to point B heaps quicker now.....lets stop technology, it cant ever get better then this....this is perfect. You might as well just say that Red has built a camera that cannot be ever improved, their is no room for improvement ever, do you suffer from Microcephaly ?

All technologies are different. My laptop, for example, I have no need to upgrade, because all I do is write and web-surf on it. It is light enough (more than) has a screen more than adequate for those tasks, and very long battery life that never seems to run out between charges. If all I was doing was Photoshop, my desktop is now 100% fully as good as it could ever meaningfully be. I never wait for anything in Photoshop. (5K video is another matter... But you see my point) If I were a stills photographer, I would have zero need to replace my current computer - it would offer nothing more to my workflow.

A camera is only for filming real-world situations, that are never more than a given dynamic range (in my direct observation that is 13 or stops or much less 90% of the time, and less than 16 stops the remaining 10 percent, with zero percent being more than that Dragon = 16.5 stops) and human eyes have limitations in terms of how much resolution they can see, so at some point, a camera completely meets all tech requirements completely for 2D filmmaking, and that's it. Better is has no utility or function.
