Hi folks,

I'm a bit alarmed here, got back from a shoot a couple of days ago, with everything going super smooth without a single hiccup.

Went to disassemble the EPIC today i.e remove various accessories in preparation for another shoot and this strange disconcerting rattle appeared. Sounds like a loose screw.

I've taken all accessories off and the rattle is still there.

Since I have only owned the EPIC for less then two months I'm not sure what to compere it too. Is it normal? Did you guys notice the same thing? Or is something faulty or loose?

I should add that the camera works just fine, I'm just a bit worried about it.

Check out this short clip.

I just did a similar rotation to a Scarlet and didn't hear anything... I have a side-handle attached. It does sound like a loose screw in there, but it could be something far less critical (a small pebble in the fan/grill, or a some tape that lost its adhesive so there's a free wire wagging back and forth). Was the last gig one with heavy vibration (helicopter or back of a car)?

yea I think it's a loose screw as well, I took the front grill off and removed the fan as I thought it might be a pebble as well, but it looks clean in there.

my last gig was very relaxed, all on tripod / dolly no vibration at all.

That does sound like a detached screw falling around inside or maybe a detached small heatsink off a component. I would recommend that you do not operate the camera again until it is fixed. There are two risks if you do. The screw may short a conductor on a PCB to the case with damaging results. A PCB or other component may no longer be adequately supported. If there is a detached tiny heatsink from a PCB-mounted component, as well s the risk of a short, the component itself may overheat to destruction and take a whole lot of other systems down with it in a cascade of further failures. With use or vibration in shipping a missing screw may allow a sub-assembly to move or flex destructively to cause mechanical damage. You should report this issue to RED. Your camera will likely be called back in for repair/assessment. If there is a risk of mechanical damage occurring inside as a result of movements during shipping, they might consent to coaching you over Skype or phone, to open the casework to identify the loose screw and perhaps re-install it or install a soft pressure pad. This would immobile any loose PCB with a view to making it more secure for shipping to them for a proper check as there may already be latent damage done. I doubt you will receive such a consent. They may prefer to carry the risk of additional shipping damage and/or suggest you insure for shipping damage versus the risk of you damaging something yourself by mining inside.

Also try taking off the lens mount.
A screw or part from a lens might have fallen into the camera, and cannot get out around the lens mount.

tried that too but there's nothing stuck or jammed in the lens mount area.

I think I'm somehow doomed with RED, this looks to be the 2nd RMA in two months of owning an EPIC :-(

I would have been laughing if it wasn't true..:-)

Thanks for the input gents, a support ticket has been sent, now just waiting for the time zones to do their thing.

Inside the SSD module there are two flat springs that hold the SSD in when inserted. I've had the screws that hold these springs in fall out on more than one occasion. A dab of thread locker solved that (and all the other loose screws on the camera, I guess they're just getting a hard time in the field)
