  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Is this correct for Full debayer then downscale

I'm new to Redcine, I've always just edited in premiere,
but now I need to do full debayer of 4k files, then downscale to SD NTSC
in redcine, is this the correct way to do this?

1. Set the project to Sd Ntsc
2. Set Show to Full res High to get a full debayer, or does this only effect preview.
3. I then chose fit to width as I want to keep the aspect of 2:1
4. Set 1st light colors
5. Set output to SD, and what ever file format I want.

Will the above give me a full 4k debayer then scale to SD?
or does the project need to be set at 4k, then scale on output?

Any help confirming the above appreciated.

Not quite, set the project to whatever resolution you shot with on the Red ie, 4k 16:9.

If you shot 4k 19:9, then chose 4k 2:1 as a project, you'll end up cropping into your source material.

Its when you go to export that you choose SD, and select whichever downsampling method you like ie, spline etc

Hey Troy,

What you've described will work, and do what you want, however there is some room to improve on it. I disagree with RONX, I usually set up my projects at the OUTPUT resolution then scale the clips to fit as you described.

first off the setting for the preview window should always match the "process" settings in the output tab (ie process full = full res high , standard = halfres high, draft = 1/4 res high) If you don't match these settings up Redcine wastes a lot of time rendering by making one version for the file and another for the screen (dumb huh?)

Now on to the major issue. You say your footage is 2:1 sooooo that would result in a SD image size of about 720x360. I have done the tests on my set up and have concluded for SD output there is almost no advantage to downsampling from 4k vs 1/2 res 4k (2k in detail essentially) and more often than not processing from a 1/4 res 4k file (1024x512 in the case of 2:1) actually results in images that look smoother on SD monitors.

Of course your milage may very but doing a full 4k debayer scaled to SD will take 20 to 40 times longer than doing a 1/2 res debayer. I'd strongly recommend you do some short tests and timing them then comparing the images.
