This way of renting Red looks very strange:
http://www.redrevo.com/
Is this another bad sign of Red cameras on a shelf like a few months ago someone was trying to rent his red one camera through an auction on ebay!!!

Hi,

It looks like an expensive option to me, and with the camera only rentable "3 days at a time". With 500 cameras being delivered a month it will be difficult for many owners without a specific skill set to rent out their cameras, as anybody who needs a camera on a regular basis will own their own.

not talking about this guys particular thing.. but in general.. anyone thinking that. by owning a RED camera, their career will be created..will suffer a RUDE awakening..

Renting the camera will most likely be a struggle (especially without existing contacts)
It will NOT, in most cases, pay for itself +make you money (if this is what you are going for)

Im not trying to deter anyone from buying.. im just trying to save the value of the camera..
Id hate to see a bunch of people think that buy owning this gear that ,
A. it will leapfrog their career into "hollywood" and
B. start a RED rental company with one or 2 camera packages

If people think these things.. then we are going to see a flux of cameras for sale in the used market for a very low amount of cash..
RED is almost caught up with the ONE.. demand for cameras ASAP will no longer exist, thus used cameras (especially alot at one time)
will kill the value of the camera, in cost of course..

not to mention with the new cameras (with better specs and sensor)
coming out..

im done..
ill read this in the morning and delete it maybe..
im pretty out of it right now actually...

It sounds like this whole thing is following the steps of a bubble market. All I know is that the Red Camera rental price will eventually settle around $500 bucks a day for a basic camera package (with no lenses), following the standard 2%-of-retail-value rental price rate used in the rental business. My only worry is that there will be so many Reds floating around that they will become like the HVX's or the DVX's in their time.

To own a camera is a freedom, and for me a life long dream having a real pro camera package. I think it's great that the RED camera exists and enable young struggling guys like me to get an opportunity that otherwise been blocked by big corps. I definitely know that a pro-package don't make an instantly career as top DP, but a small foothold in the door that CAN lead to greatness. Meanwhile I continue shooting my small bread-n-butter jobs, BUT IN 4K!!!

Cheers

Very good points Zakaree.

If anyone thought they would break in to the TV/Movie bis, by purchasing a RED they will have a difficult time........

On the flip side, the playing filed has been leveled for creative, smart people to showcase their talent like never before!

RED+Macbook pro+ AJA digital IO + equals results at a price point NEVER before seen!:sorcerer:

What do you guys think to apply this business model not specifically to Red, but to the whole equipment list needed for a rental house and production facility. Grip, lighting, accesories, lenses etc.... I'm thinking in offering a similar way to work with other companies to share some of the very expensive equipment, not needed all the time, costing more than 200k or 500k. In this way it could be a win / win situation for all parties.
Production firms could benefit from extra free use of this equipment already paid by earlier jobs and not needing to take the loan all by theirselves...with all the possible risks involved...

This covers it. Owning the camera alone means nothing... BUT there will be people who would have never broken through the Hollywood maze that will get a camera, have talent and get exposure (and make money) they never would have without shooting on RED.

Also, a lot of people will simply get to fulfill their dream of making a movie that looks like a real movie. Hard to fault them for wanting that.

The Red one's resale value shouldn't go much below $17,500, after all, thats what Red will pay you for a trade in for an Epic.

Interesting... Maybe Red will only honor this offer to original purchasers. So if you bought it used you would miss out (like with the warranty). In this case the resale value would drop quite a bit because the seller would have to lower the price enough so the purchaser would have a tough time deciding whether to buy it used or buy it new and have the trade-in option.

my understanding is that, the epic trade in will only work for the origional owners.. however, I dont know...

either way.. resale will dip simply because Red is finally getting caught up with cameras.

no one will buy a 17500 used camera (out of warrenty) when they can buy a 17500 new camera with a warrenty- same day/same week

I think the point of an inexpensive camera will bring ideas for new businesses all around the globe. So its unavoidable to have this kind of experiments.

Timeshare RED? Wow now I've seen everything. How about I just buy one or rent one when I need it? I'd love to see Redrevo's business plan...

[EDIT]- Just read the "ABOUT" them part. Not only do they not even have their camera(#2972) yet but they'll only have one camera when they receive it. And it's $7,995 for a one year membership "Limited to the first 10 new members." So that means they gross $79,995 and essentially you're paying for the privilege of financing their quite basic camera package. Not even any primes, just RED's 18-50mm zoom...

I agree. I think the one thing that will save the camera value will be trade-in value. RED One bodies have a full $17.5K trade-in value toward EPIC. So that's going to hold values up a bit, but not necessarily to the full $17.5K... I expect to see quite a few used RED packages for sale in the coming months and while the camera body may hold more value, accessory values will definitely drop.

I was just thinking regarding the original post... They want $7,995 for a one year time-share membership that will include 10 people. So that means that the maximum number of days any one of the 10 people can have the camera is 36.5 days. So that doesn't seem like that great of a deal. How about instead finding just two other people who each puts up that same amount (for a total of $24,000) and each of the 3 partners gets 121.6 days out of each of many years (not just one).

It's an incredibly poor business model. What happens if it breaks?

Asking my question again. I understand totally that this biz model would never work without having more units in house as spare or because of higher demand on certain days.

But for certain equipment except the Red cameras; like grip ,lighting , primes, high priced zooms, editing suites, grading and stuff you need more than once, but not that often to take a loan; would these people be interested in such a renting system on a membership base?? With a backup plan involved for everyone and giving everyone a huge benefit?? I suppose there must be some interested out there???

Knowing what the rental business is like, how no one wants to claim responsibility for damaged or lost gear, how everyone wants to save 5 cents off their rental and squeeze extra days out of their scheduled time... knowing all of this I can tell you that such an idea would likely collapse within a very short time.
