  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Is this a correct workflow?

After shooting on Red Epic (5k redlog film): editing in Premiere (CS6) using R3Ds, primary color grading on Redcine-X (using R3Ds), then converting R3Ds in DPX and compositing and finish color grading in After Effects. Maybe I sould not convert R3Ds in DPX?

No need to convert in DPX (or anything) if you color grading in AE.

But color grading in AE .. Hummmm.... (lol) juz' jokin'

Yes... I would like to convert only because DPX are faster in AE... I'm doing the primary grading in Redcine-X, in AE I'm only want to do some grading finishing and compositing...

The problem is: my mac almost crashes if I try to do some compositing in AE with the 3RDs, but I can work with the DPXs. Grading with Redcine-X (with R3Ds) is not a problem but I am afraid that when I convert the R3D to DPX (for compositing) I will lose quality.

There isn't much vfx, I was thinking to do the compositing with DPXs then, once the project is finished, replace the DPX with the R3D and render. This would be correct?

Alex,
try to do color grading in Danvici Resolve -> export to ProRes444 -> finish in After Effects (ProRes is easy to handle)
full debayer is important

Can I grade in Redcine-X, esport prores 444 and finish in AE? I don't have Davinci Resolve...

Yes you can, but Davinci Resolve have a free version which is better than RedCine-X on my opinion.

Ok, I'll try it! Thx! Grading in R3D and exporting ProRes 444 (finishing in AE). No quality loss?
