  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Is this a Bad time to purchase Red1

Interesting. I remembered that there was $0 trade on Reds bought after Oct 30. I rember having conversations with a couple guys who were happy they had bought their Reds before the cut-off. Guess i rembered wrong.

Dusty

Well, there is no doubt that Stages 2 or 3 offer a lot so the "cut-off" was still pretty important. That didn't mean there were no advantages left to be had, though.

Ha! Sorry Terry :) As you can imagine, having decided to purchase my Red about five minutes after the 'cutoff' point, this issue is right at the front of my mind

Yeah. I am sure you'd remember best. It's a bit of an academic exercise for me as I am a Scarlet die hard all the way! But, for a split second in that magical space of RED Studios, talking with the bigger-than-life (literally!) Jarred, I did think about springing for a RED ONE in order to get in line for Epic.

Will the Red1 be phased out, once Scarlet and Epic are released.

Or will there be some sort of upgradation like the MX, but within the current price...

Watch out for scam artist, Craig list deals etc. Best to triple check before doing any deal with a unknown stranger online these days. But if you need to shoot now then R1 is it. Rent, buy or upgrade path. Your 3 choices, Good Luck on your project!

I would not be disappointed if I buy a used R1 M for around 12K and the next day Scarlet is announced / released. If its anything higher then I am not sure if I am getting the best deal, because I strongly feel that once Scarlet is released the price of used R1 will fall down. Its just because of the Scarlet and Epic its getting difficult to make choice.
Ughh, if only decisions were not so tough.

With over seven thousand R1's out no matter what Red's decision is with the actual production line of the R1 it self, all the ones already sold will continue to receive Red's attention no doubt, Red has continuously Upgraded the R1.

Now with the MX sensor upgrade every one is getting LITERALLY a new camera, so IMO I'm confident that it will be a long time before Red should decide to stop supporting any type of U[grade for the actual R1 body.

No matter what the R1 especially with the new MX offers and will continue to offer a tremendous deal, and opportunity for any serious Filmmaker, and continues to be a MONEY MAKING MACHINE for all rental houses getting $700 per day in rentals.

Buy a used Red One and make part of the contract that the current owner will
transfer his Stage 3 Epic upgrade to you.

After Epic is out Red Ones will drop into a bottomless pit when it comes to their value.

I think Red MXs will still be in demand after Epic ships. Once Scarlet is in full flood then we will see original Red One's devalue very quickly.. One thing is certain and that is the future is uncertain

Please list out points both positive and negative. With Scarlet around the corner and with some amazing capabilities why should I still opt for Red1.

My simplest answer: If you're asking yourself this question, my gut says that you should wait for Scarlet. Reason: If anyone is going to be satisfied with a Scarlet, they're going to be banging their head on the price of the Epic and the current price of RED vs. RED 1 in the future is going to be a big drop imho.

I have asked a couple of red owners, and they didnt respond maybe they dont want to...
But I will keep looking for such deals.

The problem is I need to own a camera soon, and cant really wait forever for Scarlet.
I have considered EX3 too but again if the Scarlet or the Canon 5DMIII (or something from Canon or others to counter Scarlet) gets released, then the resale value will also gets devalued.
Trade-in seems to be the safe way to go, atleast for now, IMHO. Any thoughts?

Exactly why?

Is there any other camera that does 4k and high-speed for under $15k?

Epic will be about $35k+

Scarlet does 3k.

I still see a market for used Ones in the foreseeable future.

RED ONE doesn't do high speed at 4K either. Only 3K and 2K.

Scarlet S35 will do 5K and slow mo for under $15.

Seems there was some talk of a sensor upgrade to Monstro for the R-1. Don't know if that was confirmed or not but if that happens, it should keep the R-1 relevant for quite a long time. After all, the Space Shuttle operated for years even with only an Intel 8088 sized processor and still got the job done.

Hmmm, 17,500 (Red Body) + 4500 (MX) + 4500 (Monstro) = I dont think so.
It would be like maintaining an old car.

I don't think there will be a Monstro upgrade for the R1 -- Monstro is 36x24mm, already the Red One with an M-X sensor upgrade can't use the full 30x15mm area of the M-X sensor. Not to mention, the Monstro uses a 14-bit or 16-bit (I forget) A-D processor, not 12-bit.
