  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Is there ever going to be classic Avid finishing with Red footage?

Hi

Classic Avid finishing defined as:

Avid editorial using a compressed codec (DNxHD 36 is fantastic when using the output of a full debayer from a RED Rocket™™™)

'Total conform' using a Avid Symphony (Uncompressed 10bit 1080p)

DNxHD 185 (or 220/175) in either 10bit or 8 bit versions is simply not good enough for Red footage. (it was often fine for Hdcam footage but not Red)

total conform does not mean Tiff sequence being painfully cut back in..

Any ideas?

Does anyone else care?

thanks

Michael L

Yes there will be. Cannot speak beyond that.

I think AVID has the right idea with the direction they are heading. They are listening to everything everyone wants and figuring out the best way to implement them.
I think we will all be surprised by what they end up releasing in the next few months. NAB should be fun.

redrocket accelerated native r3d editing in MC, i know 30 editors who work on red projects week to week who would kick fcp in the trash for that.

That's the dream Kaya - but would happily settle for the "Classic Avid Finish" Michael L describes.

All the best,

Tom

Avid has traditionally been OMF/MXF (open standards) wrapped around optimized codecs for post production. Be it JFIF for standard definition or DNxHD (also open standard known as SMPTE VC-3). As camera manufacturers continue developing new cameras and formats to meet the needs of the industry as well as differentiation to other camera manufacturers (even within their own company), the Avid AMA was engineered to allow direct native access to those formats. These things don't happen overnight and never as fast as the user would like it to be. If you have used AMA, you will know how fast it is to directly link to the currently supported formats and work natively with the codec.

In the case of RED, we work through the RED supplied SDK. We have had some work to do make that happen on the Avid side. In the case of Adobe and FCP, the components were actually developed by RED. Different time schedules, engineering resources and priorities all play into any feature or format getting completed.

Deanan and I have had great communication and collaboration on ensuring that a RED workflow is complete to meet the needs of the Avid customer base who work offline, online, in large collaborative environments, etc. Ensuring consistency of metadata throughout the pipeline and all that good stuff - even simple things like being able to use both absolute and edgecode timecodes within the project - why choose one over the other?

Simple things like FCP limited 8 character support for R3D files in EDL's is already properly formatted in the ALE from ROCKETCINE-X - EDL manager will allow the Tape or Filename to be used in the comments so you are not jumping through hoops to make an EDL that Apple Color can interpret since it does not support a 16 character source ID (easy to implement though). So "support" of a format for Avid is looking at the entire ecosystem in which these system live and work in everyday - from small independent professionals to high end studio work - all Avid environment, or mixed systems throughout.

The devil is in the details -

AVID is better than FCP in so many ways. Working with RED in AVID is not really an issue at all. If it gets better and easier, I'm all for it, but AVID is genius.

Thanks Michael for all the ongoing help on here. Much appreciated.

Totally agree Chris.

We really appreciate all the work that Michael and all at Team AVID do to make our lives easier.

All the best,

Tom

Make us Avid faithful proud. In my location, my entire industry has shifted to FCP and says Avid is dead. But I've stuck to my guns. When it comes to actual 'editing', MC is the clear winner. And when (note that I didn't say 'if') they make the RED and others (D7) simpler to work with, then watch out. :)

Until you try to finish.

I use Red Rushes for the transcode at 1/4 or 1/2 debayer because full quality takes FOREVER. Yes, simple to transcode create ALE and import, but when it comes to conforming the final body of work, it takes some getting used to. And also depends on where and how the clients want to finish. We are lucky enough to have a facility in town that uses iQ with Pablo Neo. All I have to do is supply the 16 character EDL and the raw files. It can work directly with the 4k files. But there will be a time when clients want to leave town, work with someone else or have me do the finish if simple enough and low budget.

Would be cool to be able to conform the raw 4k files with the Avid MC. Which would require resolution independence (as is with FCP).

An AAF/AFE conform at 2K+ can be done with Avid DS which has a very rich conform of effects, layers, titles, etc. A reconform in MC/Symphony for HD mastering is what I am referring to that I cannot speak to at this time.

Until you try to finish.

Re-conforming Audio on a long format job in FCP can be pretty painful! In Avid you have to love that all of your sound metadata is in tact and Easy to track through your whole workflow.

The more I am learning about Avid, the more I am understanding why Avid editors do not want to make the switch to FCP!

Yes, version 10.x and later links to native R3D for conform and finishing. We have just received the SDK for FLUT, etc. and are looking to update that in DS and MetaFuze shortly.
