  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Is there any way to get a 720p60 feed out of the Scarlet?

Hey folks!

Just a shot in the dark here, but has anyone had success getting their camera to spit out a 60p feed (either from HDMI or HDSDI)? I have tried getting my Shuttle to recognize the stream as 60p but so far HDMI is a no-go and SDI just seems to give me at best a 59.94 (interlaced?) feed. I could of course have some setting wrong here, but everything I've tried yields something usable only for 24p it seems.

Thanks!

I've done 59.94 out of the HDMI into the HDMI input on a television to see if progressive frames (they're not interlaced) look like 60i video if spit out fast enough. They do, in case anyone was wondering. The TV liked the signal just fine.

I think 59.94 still counts as 60p. It's just drop-frame for TV use like 23.94 is for 24p. I don't know if you can get the project setting to be an even 60 on the Scarlet (or Epic, for that matter).

Can you set the Shuttle to 59.94?

Correction: I referred to that as drop-frame but that's not correct. I had a momentary mental lapse. It is for TV use but it has to do with the analog timing circuit being based off the 60Hz AC circuit and color TV signals interfering with the sound subcarrier signal. The term "drop frame" refers to timecode that is affected by the number of frames being less than 30 per second (29.97, as a result of the .03fps color TV signal offset). Over time, that discrepancy adds up unless it's adjusted for, hence drop frame TC.

Interesting, thanks for the reply. Unfortunately to my knowledge the Shuttle simply "detects" the signal it's receiving and I haven't been able to feed it anything I can use. There's a known issue with RGB vs YUV colorspace for HDMI input on the Shuttle, which in this case makes everything green, so HDMI is out. I can get it to pick up 59.94 it would appear from the HDSDI, but when I try to slow them down it's as though I were slowing down 24p footage. I have even tried changing the project's timebase to 59.94 but it doesn't seem to get it right. Hmm, maybe another ext. recorder would do the trick.

I bought a Black Magic Hyperdeck Shuttle 2 to record 1080p pro res on my Scarlet. Footage looks great. When the new 5d3 firmware came out I tried it out with my deck. In the process I inadvertently triggered the deck to record at 720 60i. Ended up shooting two very important projects on my Scarlet with this setting before I noticed what had happened. It was quite upsetting to say the least. So be careful not to make the same mistake I did!

Hey folks!

Just to update an old thread in case anyone else was curious about this:

Although this is a very limited use case and not the ideal, it might be useful to somebody. In prepping for a very low-light shoot that requires slow motion (web delivery only), I decided to dig back into this. As has been pointed out around here before, you can get very usable high-ISO footage out of the HD-SDI tap, and I happen to have a Shuttle II that will accept 720p60 input over SDI. I was never able to get this to work with my Scarlet, so I don't know if that's a Scarlet thing or was just earlier firmware or something else (last tried months ago in something like 3.x.x firmware, currently on 4.0.18). But my relevant settings were:

5KHD
Framerate 59.94
Timebase 59.94
Monitor control - HDSDI output enabled, set to 720p, refresh rate Auto

Did a HIGHLY unscientific test just to see if it would even work, with the only other moving thing in my apt, my cats ;). No time to upload footage now, but here is a still from 12800 ISO. Although I wouldn't WANT to use that ISO ever, this was actually not bad looking in motion (and much brighter in the footage than it was to the eyes). Verrry old lens at f 1.8. Surely could clean it up a bit with Neat Video as well.

My only question now is why I'm getting letterboxing-- As I said this was 5KHD setting, monitor control was set to "Clean" and lookaround was not enabled. If anybody has any insight on that I'd love to hear it.

Cheers!
