  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

is there a reason the GH2 zacuto thread was closed?

Because this site is policed pretty heavily.

LOL Martin doesn't give a chance :-) I suggest something... Let him to go to bed (ECT) and try to post it at this time as for instance. The thread will survive for a few hours. Quite probably, enough to end with three pages next turn :D

A good reason for closing that thread down, might have been that it states just hearsay and could easilly create a bit of FUD.

OTOH, those closedowns create a bit of the not so nice RU rep.

RED has made its choice between those two bad results.

Like it or not.

The zacuto thread is still live over at Jarreds other site, dvxuser, though.
Unfortunately the discussions tend to be more interesting over here...

good points. I will say I was hoping this could lead to a discussion of how these cameras compare to on another in the context of finding out maybe in which situations the gh2 could be a bcam etc. I realize that RED offers benefits of resolution and DR, but I absolutely think that for web videos or even commercials a gh2 could serve as a bcam. Those are situations where limiting the final video to 1080p could level the playing field (something red basically admitted when asking zacuto to show the final products in 4k).

People on this thread always talk about future proofing their footage by shooting in 4k, but if you are making a commercial or corporate video that will never be seen again once its short broadcast/web lifespan is over then it doesn't matter.

The fun thing I find, is that personally I shoot 5k for "now-proofing" and find a lot of good reasons for RAW aqusition over RGB.

I still see the argument for other solutions. Especially as to perceived ease of use, which I guess is why the dslr's I know of LET you record jpeg if you insist... :)

But RED does not want to open that can of worms. They have made a clear business decission on how they want things to be done with their cameras.
Fair enough.
Probably looses them a lot of sales in the short run.
Jim seems set on the long.
Which all in all is good.

another good point. They used to talk about having 1080 and 720rgb modes but I guess that was officially abandoned when they got rid of the 3k scarlet. That's unfortunate though because the mini primes would have been a good way to get wide fields of view on the cropped high speed modes on EPIC cams i.e. the 6mm.

Beware, the man is watching you!

always.

Seriously though, threads like that get closed a lot. If you want to discuss other camera products, go to their respective forums or to other product-neutral forums like DVXUSER. This is RED's house, not GeneralCameraDiscussions.com.

I can understand that. I think the point of the thread originally was to compare the two cameras. The very idea of that has been laughed off this forum before but I'm curious to see what people saw in the GH2 footage that they didn't in RED.

***Disclaimer**** I know the EPIC is, at its best and displayed at its true resolution, a superior camera. I am just pursuing this discussion out of curiosity. I haven't been posting on forums as much as I used to and this is just something that sparked my curiosity.

RED has no reason to fear DSLRs or whatever other camera in the world. What else has 5K (6K after Jan 2013) ? Because of that, re-framing is even possible on post without losing final resolution. What else device offers the same? HDR 18 stops going beyond film? Frame rates?

Don't be silly : ) The only 'stuff' that can threat the RED product is the continuous democratization of this technology which can lead DSLRs to offer as same as big boys.

Oh boy, but that's technology! We already all know. Any party in this business must re-think the prices policy alone (very well designed since the early beginning BTW ;) product line and to learn to re-adapt and fast, 'cause the things are going along. Quicker than Jim to react, it looks like hard to tell :P

This is not a secret. The best of RED is the people who have made the company since one of best double coat we've ever seen in action (Jim/Jarred). I guess better, it'd be impossible to even imagine when people like me placed the first deposit. I remind you, not even Jarred himself from his old posting over dvxuser. The road has been surpassed beyond any initial expectations, I see. When this happens, nothing to fear except hard work to keep the hype up.

Shall we call a spade a spade ... There is a difference between those making a living and those shooting on other gear. There is a reason why it's RED DIGITAL CINEMA and not yadda yadda yadda my little camera aliases and what not. That particular application might be fine for some but far from good enough for me -- far!

The long run is the winning bet. In the meantime proxys from 3rd parties are available for those who need them. Heck I used one for one day on my last shoot, time constraint reasons only.

I think you are dead wrong if you believe this test was conducted by kids for kids. Take another look at the credentials of those involved: ASC....

Now go listen to Shane Hurlbut ASC hype the canons. I say "hype" because of his need to bash other choices on his way to nirvana.

"RED has nothing to fear":
Perhaps fear is not the appropriate word, but RED has every reason to pay close attention. Niche is vulnerable, particularly in this noise bolstered market. RED does not make cameras for consumers, but when its $30K Epic is said to place behind an $800 hacked camera then that is a growing advertising trend it could do without. RED is being battered silly, and not only by consumers and disgruntled indies: this is not the time to be aloof.

For the rest of us, it should be quite apparent by now that making images is about the only way to vindicate our own choices.

For some reason, I mentioned price.

Don't count RED will touch on prices on the actual product range (perhaps some promotion code ala Best Buy, nothing else ;) But open policy as far as the proprietary media concerns with cards alternative to SSDs, as for instance. Or the introduction of an offer lower than the actual product line (seen today as unlikely, though) might be both the only solution. When 4K flag is pretty close to be outdated as trademark and the 'professional' label out of order with the big boys entering in business in the prosumer range offering RAW and enough bitrate or even uncompressed as the little ones (Blackmagic) already started to. And both are not able by itself to stop the 4K for $4K race, neither close the open window. Well, we already have 6K for $6K ;-) We are almost there.
