  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Is there a decent inbuilt audio solution for the 2/3 Scarlet?

Hi

I'm excited about using the 2/3 scarlet for one man run-and-gun infomercials.

Is there a decent inbuilt audio solution for the 2/3 Scarlet? Or is the Zoom H4N with a lapel mic the best portable solution?

(... I have a Sound Devices MM-1 if that can be part of a solution ...)

Cheers

Adam

The Scarlet brains have two independent microphone level channels, balanced input circuits, 48V Phantom Power, digitized at 24-bit 48KHz on the front. Scarlet can also take the Pro I/O module which will have full sized XLR inputs. Nobody has had a chance to test the audio quality on Epic or Scarlet yet but we all expect it to be very good.

It would be nice to get some info on this. Although many prefer to record double system, a lot of us will use single system. Since it records 24bit, thats an amazing feature by itself. A short test showing noise levels, hiss or any issues if any would be really good.

Anyone here to recommend us a good lightweight shotgun microphone ?

Add to that - all analog inputs include a soft clip Limiter, and the PRO I/O includes 4 channel AES / EBU digital audio input.

The latter is intended for use with high performance external audio mixers such as Sound Devices 552.

Thanks, Stuart. Low budget run and gunner here. Like the limiter. Is there a line/mic switch? And any specs on the preamps, i.e. equivalent to Sound Devices?

Hold on Stuart. I need to recheck my facts about the 552...So it outputs 4 channels of AES, which can then be recorded into the brain via the pro IO. I had planned on the base IO, but that's very tempting. hmm. That's pretty good.

I wonder what is cheaper. A 788T or a 552 and a Pro IO?

Who am I kidding. My audio already has a 552! Sweet!

Yeah I was wondering about the quality of the audio components for small 1 man crew projects where you want to use the onboard sound with a radio and rifle mic. Are there links to see photos of of any of the components you mention above?

I heard that the standard audio inputs on the scarlet are mini jack?

Sound devices are using xlr as analog or digital so it would be nice to have than option with the scarlet. If you have already spent money on sound gear to be able to send digital audio into the camera and therefore not have to worry about cheap preamps, useless limiters and low quality a/d convertors. Digital inputs would be a lot cheaper.

Removed because I was incorrect.

Stuart, in the draft of the Epic guide that's out there it says the audio on the brain is unbalanced and will not do 48V phantom power am I right?

No, you are wrong.

The 3.5mm inputs are balanced and have 48V phantom power, according to the Epic manual. Page 121.

Which page does it say that Jake, that's an error in the manual if true.

I'd heard this is because Phantom Power wasn't a possibility so close to the sensor

Put that one down to an internet rumor, not true.

Audio is the same on Scarlet as on EPIC, Phantom power is available on both.

Got that one from the wooden camera thread:

The brain does not output 48v phantom power. Due to the nature of the TRS connector, inserting and removing plugs with 48v would be extremely harmful for the brain and mic.

Glad to hear it's wrong though.

You're right about the BAL, UNBAL, I apologize it, even gives you the chance to choose between the two :) I'll remove that info from my old post so it doesn't come up on google searches. Thanks for the response.

Freddyyy and anyone else interested in Scarlet audio should download the Epic manual and look at pp. 12,13,93 and 124 ("printed" page numbers). AFAIK anything having to do with audio on Epic also applies to Scarlet.

RED says it has "high quality" preamps. Even though they don't list specs, coming from RED that tells me they are truly professional high quality, not "prosumer" high quality advertising hype.

You can input analog from a mixer. Just adjust input level appropriately using an output tone signal from the mixer (p.13). To input digital you'll need the Pro i/o module - around $3k.

(BTW, given what we now know about sound and other i/o's on the brain I wonder if the Base i/o is still in the works. Was it on display at NAB?)

I will probably also use a wireless mic and shotgun as my most frequent sound input combo. With one of the soft menu buttons on the Redmote, and one of the on-camera user buttons programmed to open the audio menu I'll be good to go.

The mini-jacks are fully balanced mono inputs just like an XLR. Wooden Camera is already making an adapter.

Mono or Stereo?
In Epic Manual&(draft) they talk about "Two 3.5mm phone jacks on the front of the brain support two independent channels "
and

Pin Signal Description Direction
A (TIP) IN + Mic Input (+48V Phantom Power) In
B (RING) IN - Mic Input (+48V Phantom Power) In
C (SLEEVE) GND Camera ground --

Each input is mono, combined... voila, stereo!

Yes i know, but they talk about a 3.5mm jack :
"in Signal Description Direction
A (TIP) IN + Mic Input (+48V Phantom Power) In
B (RING) IN - Mic Input (+48V Phantom Power) In
C (SLEEVE) GND Camera ground --"

edit:Isn't this stereo?
They show a TRS in Manual.
