  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Is the EPIC almost perfect... ?

It's interesting that most 'PRO' cameraman in China think Epic is a joke, nothing but useless high resoulutions and high FPS. Becasue they have no idea on how to use a EPIC and their shot are always even worse than C300. For example, I haven't seen many use HDRX, and never saw any cameraman who knows what color space and Gamma is for, and some famouse directors insisted that ISO is the most important thing...Recently they are talking about how far BMCC goes beyond Epic.........I love epic, and looking forward to the Dagon, or could red enable HDRX when in SYNC mode.

Mark, absolutely love this post.....and I'm inclined to agree with you about the ALMOST perfect camera....but......have you tried to make beautiful images using the EVF/OLED? It's our weak leak, don't you think (I do)? When this gets fixed I'm all in!

Im getting great results from mine...
Yes.. its warm, but the blacks are great for us.
But then again. I never really worry about colour that much when I shoot. I throw all my in camera meta data settings out the window the moment I transcode as I have my own secret sauce, and if I edit in 5k, I usually set new colour points in RCX or PREM 6 on the run.

But really. honestly.. the EVF does everything I want it to do. Its pin sharp, I can gauge exposure with it, I love the rich blacks compared to the LCD version... Its a touch warm like I siad, but never worries me.

Ive noticed alot of people only use the touch screen... I use the OLED because I like to turn the rest of the world off around me, and put in some head phones to some cool music while Im shooting. :)))

India was like that as well.... Most people are scared of new tech, but now with education.. they are really starting to embrace the power of RED. China will do the same once people learn more. Alot of DP's like things simple like a basic video camera, hence why Alexa fits there life. EPIC to me is as simple, but to alot of my DP friends... EPIC is difficult. Until i show them... the penny then drops.

This will always be a COKE or PEPSI or Doctor Pepper world... ( ARRI Vs RED Vs CANON ) At the end of the day, people will use what they are comfortable with.
Some like simple HD pro res or HD H264, some like hi resolution 5k RAW... At the end of the day, who really cares.
Clients pay for content... my clients dont care if I shot on an iphone, so long as the finished images look good. :)

oh.... and a C300 has nothing over an EPIC.. thats just silly talk. But mind you, c300 at night is pretty awesome !

Mark, I want your OLED....mine is nothing like that. It's been to Red and replaced once, second one is the same as the first. In low contrast situations it has NO contrast. Oh well, hopefully someday Red will hear some of us and give us user adjustable EVF control of Contrast, Brightness, and Gamma (dare I say, like Sony). But clearly all other aspects of the Epic are stellar!

Adjusting the color meta settings is fine as long as you're not recording to an external recorder because it gets baked in the proRes file :(

And as long as knowledgeable people have control over post. Otherwise you'd be creating more issues then just dealing with the less then PERFECT EVF.

Mark, now I'm intrigued......I'm on a shoot in Atlanta, we're off Sat, Sun. I'll PM you over the weekend.....Looking forward to PERFECTION.......thanks.

I like the dynamic range of the Alexa and the rolloff into the highlights. I like the colors of the F65 and I like the sensitivity of the C300. Having said all that I chose the Epic and I'm very happy I did. It's not perfect but it is an excellent tool that is only getting better. There is room for improvement on both the functionality and the image side of the camera. I hope the Dragon sensor will once and for all put an end to all the silly debates as to which camera is better and at the same time help retire photochemical all together.
