  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Is the amount my Scarlet-W's noise normal?

Hi,

I just wanted to know if this amount of noise is normal. Compared to other scarlet's off course. I'm fairly new to RED, owned an Amira before and the hardest part about an Amira is just to switch it on and off. The rest speaks for itself.
I'm loving the scarlet so far, but it just needs a little more light than the Amira and also has more noise if you ask me.

I did the calibration a couple of times when the camera's temperature was at it's normal level after shooting about 15-20 minutes.

I've put some files online for you guys to check out.

Thanks in advance!

Why are you shooting HD? Use the full sensor and then do your comparison... 6k / full frame scarlet W vs Fullframe amira both downsampled to HD... then the result looks different.

Here is Scaled down your frame so it ts shown as if downsampled.... not much noise if you ask me. But your exposure is set for whats outside the window. With red you could open up so you got about 80% of full exposure of the interior and then als use HDRx to keep those windows. That would trump your old axla with about 8 stops of latitude at least and would be clean as a ever.

But first start using the full sensor not just 1/6 of it.

Thanks for your comment! I shot in HD to get slomo. First I wanted to get a higher framerate, but because it was so dark I decided to shoot at 75fps.

And about the exposure, the aperture was fully opened and the ISO is only meta, so there wasn't really a way to get more light on the sensor. Could have put a light up, but then the whole scene would look less dramatic... Any toughts?

Yes if your wide open then not much you can do... But from the little action you got there you could actually have gone 360 shutter, as that does not show much at 75fps if motion is not to much. It would help a lot, make it twice as good. And if you shoot 75p scarlet W can do much more than HD, no? The more pixels you use when capturing and the more light they get the cleaner the end result will look and yes iso is metadata.

Basically when shooting HD you scale up your noise like 9 times. Then you lay on a 17:1 compression on top of that your dark areas is exposed to about 20%, and you also "zoom into the lens" by the cropping so you are loosing sharpens like if you used a extender.... All in all, far from a good combo.

Thanks man, very clear comment. And yes I could have done more than HD, it was a last minute decision to go for 75 in stead of 200 or something, and also the client was afraid their editing system couldn't work with 5K footage (which wasn't a problem in the end off course). So the HD part was indeed a very bad choise!
