  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

is sony stepping up? big announcement on the 20th I guess

I think we'll see the codec upgraded to 4:2:2, maybe 4:4:4 Dual SDI out new lens and maybe bigger chip size, 2/3rd inch.

Even if this were the case, can they compete with Scarlet 2/3"? 120 fps? RAW? Under $5K with lens?

Maybe for broadcast, I guess.

with all the talk today about the 5D/7D how could a 2/3 sensor be pass off as big?

Huh?

Huh?

If Sony has painted itself into a corner with a 2/3" chip why hasn't Red painted itself into a corner with a 2/3" chip?

Reality check time.

The campaign is being targeted to the 'EX' market.
It is a global campaign meaning not niche 'digital cinema' market.

The PDW-F350/5 is dead in the water and sinking as it is outperformed by the EX-1 & 3.

The only other entry level shoulder mounted HD camera Sony have is the HVR-S270 (HDV tape)

They are lacking in that market and probably losing sales to the HPX-500 and 300 due to lack of a product. Big leap $ to the PDW-700.

My guess would be a SXS version of the PDW-F355 retaining the 1/2" sensor but may be a compression bump up to 50Mbs and 4:2:2.

Otherwise they may go crazy and go 2/3" SXS with 50Mbs and 4:2:2 but this will not make their PDW-700/800 client base that happy.

They are hampered by many broadcasters not accepting anything less than 2/3" sensor size as HD. For Sony this means the relatively costly options of PDW-700/800, F900R, F23, F35.

The biggest strength of Sony broadcast cameras is that they use 2/3" prism 3CCD lenses and that Sony has a long-established reputation. That's about it.

All broadcasters and independent DOP's have already large selection of expensive 2/3" glass, some irreplacable in any other format. Take, for example the mighty Canon HJ40x or Fuji HA42x series lenses or 100x box lenses. There are no equivalents in any other format. These lenses are often the bread&butter for vast majority of field and studio production for broadcast. It is hard to compete with Sony and Panasonic in this field with a different sensor size or single CMOS sensor for that matter.

My guess is that this is where Sony will be heading.

I'm with the camp that thinks this is the updated EX line that introduces a higher bitrate and 4:2:2. Not sure about the 4:4:4 out in this part of their product line. I would think they'll stick with the 1/2" chip but wouldn't be shocked by the 2/3 if they announce that. Would seem to be impeding on their broadcast cameras though.

Could it be they have a still/motion DSMC style camera? I doubt it, but they are in the stills game, so it wouldn't be a huge stretch. It would allow them to at least compete with Scarlet, Canon, and Nikon and perhaps salvage some market share that these hybrid cameras have begun to take.

It's going to be an interesting last couple of weeks in October. Guess we'll see how it all shakes out.

I see what you mean but a PDW-F350 that moves from Blu-ray disc to a 50mbit XDCAM EX format would only get a BIG meh from me... That's one of those: great idea you should have done two years ago when it would have been revolutionary, not now in 2009 when you kind of have no other choice with that product configuration.

A little mini F35 priced at the same point as an EX3- now that would be BIG. But I don't see that as too likely.

One thing thing I've noticed lately is that other companies are trying to copy Red's marketing strategies. I actually don't know if Red has "strategies" or if it's just a company (and a community) being genuinely excited about these cameras... seems like it's the latter.

When these other companies attempt to re-create their own excitement somehow it's not quite the same thing... probably because it's not about the marketing, it's about the product that's being marketed (I'm not sure if these other companies fully understand this).

So true. The problem is, Sony doesn't have a CEO with a badass avatar of himself chomping on cigars, blowing out red smoke, staying up all night churning out awesome renders, slumming here with us here on a message board, etc. :coolgleamA:

You can't sit in a marketing meeting and manufacture something like this.

Well Sony is also a japanese company which also adds too it, I think if they where to spin off a little rebel group dedicated to making amazing cinema products sort of a macintosh team (1984) meets panavision set in california you would probably see Sony become a little more like Red.

I would have to agree with this plus Sony's biggest market is still ENG and consumer, which would explain somewhat why they've held back quite a bit on going after the cinema market (as far as cameras are concerned).

Sony's CEO is accessible. I can't count the number of times I've shaken his hand. Ahhh...on second thought I can. Zero. Jim on the other hand(one of the wealthiest men in American) has been accessible from the beginning.

Why he spends so much time on this forum amazes me but it's one of the main reasons we trust in Red.

See ya on the 30th Jim.

Eh...I think pre-announcing things was around before RED came along. In fact, I know it was...I remember Intel launching the 386 chip that way. Don't make me break out the old camera magazines...
