Is Scarlet Fixed-Lens a MODULAR setup?

I'm guessing people who's been to RED Day can answer this.

The fixed-lens brain will include:
  • Side CF Mount
  • Battery Mount

Are these two items connected to the brain or are they removable modules?

Reason I want to know: If I want to rent a S35 and swap out the brain, would I have to rent a CF Mount and Battery mount as well?

I'm going to buy the fixed lens model because I don't want to put money into lenses until I transition to the s35, but the 2/3" Fixed lens should fit my needs for a while (as long as it's modular).

Thanks,
-J

The fixed Scarlet is definitely modular. The only thing attached is the 8x zoom. CF mount and battery module are swappable with any other DSMC brain.

That is the fixed Scarlet on the right in this pic:

Justin, were the models you photographed weighted. If so, could you guess on the approx weight?

Nice. Thanks.

Are the XLR and other I/O connections for the Scarlet Fixed a separate module as well?

brain has one LCD/viewfinder connector, and two balanced mini jacks for sound.

If your conserned about mini jacks for sound, mini jacks to full XLR adaptors are cheap or easy to make. More I/O options are available in the base module and Pro module.

No all of the brains at RED Day were empty so it was impossible to get a good idea of the weight.

Justin, all of the brains have some ports built in (1/8 audio in) but the I/O module with the XLR ports is separate.

Good!

Did they announce when they'd release more details? I want to know what $$$ it will take to build my full setup and what options I have.

My guess would be that RED Day is meant as a field-test to get customer reactions/feedback, then make minor adjustments accordingly.

Justin: I am pretty sure you are wrong about the S35 crop factor in the above linked guide.

If I had to guess, I'd say your 1.6x crop factor is based on the assumption that the S35's sensor is the size of Super 35 format. But in reality it's actually bigger.

Super35 is 24.89 mm wide (which is probably close to a 1.6x crop factor). But S35 from Red means 30x15mm. So the horizontal crop of the S35 compared to an FF sensor is just 1.13, meaning the field of view (horizontally) compared to a FF still camera is very similar.

I should have clarified I was using the 4k mode of the RED One sensor (22.2mm x 12.6mm) not the 5k DSMC sensor (30x15mm) in that chart. I will update it, thank you for pointing that out.

Good!

Neither of the I/O modules (which have the XLR inputs) come with the Scarlet though.

There are headphone, HDMI, power (I think) and a few other ports attached to all the brains though, as well as the 3.5mm audio jacks on the front.

So there's a minijack audio input in the front?
