  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Is Red getting ready to release Pro Primes, Mk II?

Lens waiting time.

Lens waiting time.

Cooke S4/i order now you will get them at 4th quarter of 2013
Cooke 5i order now you will get them at 4th quarter of 2014!!!
Leica Summilux-C lenss you order now you will get them in 2-3 years
Angenieux zooms minimum of 6 or months of waiting
No idea about MP but assume there is some minimum of months of waiting.
UP I know there are some new for sale on the market
Red also said they will come out with anamorphic lenses but as some pointed out here it is not easy to make good lenses.
I know Ketch Rossi has some Leica, brand new, for sale, as a set or maybe individually.

Some were asking for RPP at at T1.3, guys these are T1.8 . RPP are very good lenses, especially because of their price, their major fault is size and weight, other than that you will be very happy with them.

Last I heard Dragon is not physically bigger than the current sensor, just more dense...unless that changed.

It's a larger dimension sensor and more dense. Ill find the measurements and update this post. NVM Alan beat me to it.

Jim said in the Dragon thread that S35 lenses will vignette more on Dragon than MX at 6k, but windowing down to 5K you will have no vignetting, which we do now on MX. 5K is slightly smaller on Dragon than the MX.

haha we know they are t1.8, we want 1.3 and cover FF. The RPP's as I stated from post 2 are excellent, but they are too big, too heavy, and lack great focus markings. Were looking for a new set of RPP's (be it a version 2, compact and fast), not the same thing we already have.

Yes, that must be very important for you to have this 0.5 of a difference...

Must be a piece of cake to design and manufacture good lenses

Umm, yeah thats about a stop of extra latitude...

No one said it was easy.... Were only saying we are wishing for it....Jeeze man lighten up. Super Speeds cost $30,000 new back in the day. It is possible but definitely not easy.

I think the existing RPPs are great, and T1.8 is great. Only the size/weight of the wide ones is a problem.

My wish would be for additional focal lenghts - still T1.8 - but make them in the size of the 50/85/100.

I want: 21, 28, 40, 135.

If you don't know what difference a whole stop (almost) can make...

The only reason I want a T1.3 set is because they don't make a T1.0 set...!

No idea what a whole stop make (btw it is not almost it is full stop)
Does it has anything to do with inverse-square law
?
Or a square root of 2? I think I am getting it... a square root of 2 is 1.414 if I multiply 1.3 by 1.414 I am getting 1.8, multiply 1.8 by 1.414 you get 2, 2 x 1.414=2.8, 2.8x1.414=4 and so on to 5.6, 8, 11 etc. Is that the connection? Double amount of light...

If you check the Zeiss hi speed carefully when shooting at 1.3 you will see there is a noticeably drop of sharpness on the edges.
Also try to watch some scenes in Kubrick's Barry Lyndon. Douglas Milesome, focus puller on that movie, had to tie Ryan O'neal to his chair in the lighted by candles scene because shooting it with special lenses, made by Angenieux or Zeiss for that movie with stop of 0.9 or 0.7 don't remember exactly, made every deep breath Ryan took to take him out of focus. So the whole text is delivered with hardly any move of the body, frozen.

Zeiss High Speed Lenses = Zeiss Super Speeds?

That scene your talking about in Barry Lyndon was not shot on Super Speeds. Those were shot on the specially developed NASA 0.7 lenses. Super Speeds don't fall off on the sides as much as it sounds. If anyone would like to test this print a focus chart and move the camera to where the chart takes up the entire frame, open up the iris to t1.3, and look at the edge sharpness compared with the center.

Even MKI's don't fall off that bad:

Just finished a show on super speeds. They got the magic. I think with a certain lighting style they work great wide open (higher con lighting, night scenes). For low con light, I personally find 2.0 to be my threshold. Either way, they flare much better than RPP's and are half the weight. Last year I ran tests against Schneider's Cine Xenars vs beat up three blade Mark 1's with bayonet to PL adaptors circa 1981. The Mk 1's crushed the Schneiders in all respects.

It should be said again: there's a gold mine sitting right here in front of everyone's faces. Why do lens manufacturers not pounce on making reproductions of Super Speeds? The patents have long expired, n'est-ce pas? I can imagine the marketing departments' rhetoric: In today's changing environment, spearheaded by the dramatic change to digital capture, digital photographers seek a modern optical aesthetic based on cutting edge technology to match the exciting philosophy of the cameras they now use ... blah blah blah. ::sigh::

Edit: There will likely be trademark issues with reproductions, so they could be called Speed Classics or something.
