  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Is it worth it?

Is it worth it to go from Scarlet W to Dragon X or a better option to go to Gemini from Scarlet W?
Just overall.

You'll just need to consider what your primary work is and will be - low light (or low-budget) vs. normal lighting (or a budget to afford enough light to feed the Dragon sensor)?

If you continue with a Dragon sensor, have you been happy with the noise levels that you do get in footage? How about colors? Will a Gemini or Dragon-X get you closer to images that your clients will be happy with?
Those are just some questions to think about.

I can't speak from Gemini experience, as I'm still on a Weapon Mg 6K with Dragon sensor. My reasons for staying put so far are:

  • The camera does what I need it to
  • 6K is a nice field of view for me
  • I do enjoy the image of the Dragon sensor, even straight out of camera with RED's own LUTs
  • I'm rarely bothered by the noise I get at higher ISOs - I'm used to it
  • My clients probably won't care what camera I'm using so long as I deliver the content they're asking for
  • Secretly hoping someday RED will announce another 6K camera in their DSMC2 lineup that I can migrate to

Well, that's just the thing. Certain options open up when you have the ability to do more. Meaning, if you car isn't 4 wheel drive, you sort of pass on the muddy roads and when you do have it, you kind of invite the challenge. So, there is all that!
Anyway, thank you for your point of view. Much appreciated!

Upgraded from Dragon to Gemini in December and am not regretting it.

Just my 2¢

That also depends on the lenses you own. Scarlet has a 28.94mm image circle (S35ish) and Gemini has a 34.73mm image circle at the same resolution (5120x2700).
