Well, the way we figure things is that past a certain percentage of our shoot days per year, an item is worth buying. Just simple business math. People say "star Dps don't own any gear" to which I say some do, and also, since when are star DPs also investment experts?
Anyway, in music videos I'd say 70% is a fair estimate.
And those producers are hearing the horror stories, which grow in number every day. They are not stupid, and they get the notion of penny-wise-pound-foolish. Working for those who don't is awful anyway.
