  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Hello there,
I just got my self a Scarlet.

When I google my question, all I found are guides about how great RAW footage is. Great.
But can I shoot with my red without shooting RAW ?
It can sound dumb (Why would you shoot with a red then ?) etc... etc... But I do wonder if it's possible !

Thank you very much.

Best,
Joris.

You can add a Prores recorder to the back (Atomos, Blackmagic), etc.

The new Weapon body records RAW redcode AND Prores at the same time.

Redcode = RAW
Prores = Not RAW

A ProRes recorder on the back however, (I think) will only allow you to record in 2K on Scarlet and Epic.

Your RED Scarlett only records only a raw image to a redmag ssd disk in up to 5k resolution. The raw file records redcode or .R3D file which can be decoded into other formats.

In order to record an image that is not RAW, you would have to add third party hardware and record the image from the hdmi or HD Sdi port. These are not raw image streams.

The short answer is: No.

RED's raison d'être is RAW.

Well at least you are here now - and have (in between some of my snarky comments) access to some of the best shooters out there (see David Mullen ASC above) who are very generous with their time and knowledge.

Welcome to the community, ask a lot of questions, and shoot that Scarlet to within an inch of it's life!

Wouldn't it be the 1080P RGB signal made for monitoring that you can record externally, a live debayer of whatever resolution you are shooting at (4K probably)?

That is correct. Before we upgraded our Scarlet to an Epic, we would enable the 5k look around. A recorder like the Hyperdeck Shuttle would create a 1080p prores debayered from the 5k creating a pretty clean image. I believe Timur has an in depth post on it.

Glend,
I bought the brain, the screen.
Just got myself 4x SSDs, and should receive the Sidehandle/redvolt by tomorrow. So I couldn't "try" it yet.

Thank you for your answers.

I think we are all surprised that you bought the camera without knowing the answer to your original question beforehand.

Well used MX Scarlets are cheap now so the research necessary before purchasing what is prosumer priced now is probably less extensive and there are tons of on board recorders to pick from, I'm on a job that has shot hundreds of TBs out hdsdi so it's fine to skip raw I shoot for every food company out there and it's baked in mxf
