my computer is old ... and slow.... Mac Pro 3.1, 16 Gb RAM.
Can not see a clip in 1/8 res without stopping 2-3 x (usually 20-30 sec long clips)
Would it be possible to load the clip into RAM and play it from there without stop-go like the traffic on 405 at 6:00PM?

It should do that automatically. If you park the playhead on a clip, you should see a grey bar start to roll out along the track of the playhead. This is a pre-debayered preview that gets loaded into RAM. If you drop the res down (say, to 1/16) you should see the bar roll out both quicker, and for a longer duration. If you up the res to 1/4 or 1/2, the grey bar will not reach as long and will take longer to roll out.

There is a setting that deals with this in the RCX preferences. Go to Preferences, then Playback, and you can adjust how much RAM from your machine will be eaten up for this preview bar.

good suggestion! Thank you. Would it give me any problem somewhere else, if I set the memory usage to 90%?

Sure could! If your RAM is full of a debayered R3D clip, it can't be used for something else immediately, and has to be cleared, and such. Not the end of the world, but a source of slow downs. Mine is set to 75% and I never had an issue. I also pretty much open RCX, use it for what I need, and then close it down. I rarely multitask with it. If you rarely multitask with it, then 90% shouldn't be a problem, unless you're not leaving enough for the OS.
