  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

It didn't used to be and my search here finding nothing implies to me that it still isn't possible - but I must ask.

Is there any way yet to export as redcode? Basically I have 1 minute of footage of which I want 10 seconds to share with artists. As DPX, the files are enormous - bigger than the entire redcode file. But, if I could just export/clip out the redcode to a smaller redcode - that would make my visfx flow be so much more efficient. Is this possible?

And if so - please let me know so that the next person can search "export redcode" and find this posting. Thanks.

if you point your red at the moniter and shoot whats on the screen.....

no....Red is only a capture codec....
for that quality/size you need cineform...

you could try a jpeg2000 codec which is wavelet compression
http://www.morgan-multimedia.com/M-JPEG2000/

or EXR using PIZ compression (also wavelet) with the half float option

with EXR you should have options for PIZ RLE ZIP PXR24 and B44

I think PXR44 reduces it to 8bit color(although I could be wrong) as well as B44

other then that you have a few other lossless and lossy codecs like BitJazz
http://www.bitjazz.com/en/products/sheervideo/

it's too bad that redcode does not function as a typical codec outside the camera.

also if your doing visfx, I would personally stay with linear color instead of LOG....most compositers and 3d do a little better math working in a linear colorspace(can't explain why but, I have read lots of documentation on it)and the Red source files are linear Raw as well....

that would lead me towards EXR...

No, there is no way.

There two things to consider:

1. what you are compressing/storing (raw sensor data or debayered RGB)
2. how you are compressing/storing (wavelet, jpeg, uncompressed...)

The 1. doesn't make sense in what you are trying to do. It doesn't make sense to apply bayer pattern onto a rendered and colour graded images.

The 2. is a choice of codec, compression and format. You can use different codecs and compression, including wavelet type, to produce quick time or other video formats (but not raw sensor data formats like r3d).

edit: Mike beat me to it

Thanks for the answer. For our GS vfx we need dpx or tga at a minimum it seems.

It's so very strange that there is no way to simply divide a clip up a bit. I will need to insist the camera people start turning off the darn camera more often.

DPX would be ok, TGA is a little on the weak side, unless broadcast only....
for good color fidelity I would go with EXR or another high bit depth codec.

As I use Cineform, I see some similarity in type of codec.
