  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Is it possible to connect Scarlet to TV?

Somebody has connected Scarlet to TV for use Tv as field monitor? Is it possible via HDMI?
Or maybe better to connect comp monitor as field monitor?
Any ideas what can be used as field monitor?
 
Yes but the camera sends out a true progressive signal and most TV monitors want progressive segmented frames not true progressive, so you might need a converter of some sort depending on the tv model. Black Magic and other companies make them. My set has HD SDI running to both Avid directly so we can log and capture and it has an out that sends it via HDMI to two tv's and also a field monitor. We use the black magic multi bridge as the true P to PsF converter

So if I want to use TV as field monitor I need to buy some adaptor maybe HD-SDI to HDMI or HD-SDI to SDI? from true progressive signal to progressive segmented frames?

Or maybe if connect 7'' field monitor to camera and then via HDMI connect TV set to this field monitor?
 
If your 7" field monitor has a passive loop through, you're just sending the same signal out as you're inputting.

The monitor would need to have a converter built in.

As Brian said, there are plenty of add on converters you can get hold of.

Basically, it depends on the model of your TV. Bear in mind that some pro monitors don't accept progressive & others do.

Really, you need to see what signals it accepts via the manual or plug in true progressive feed.

If you have a PS3, you can set that to 1080P - progressive. If your TV goes balck, it can't handle progressive :)

It is hard to understand What converter is it exactly needs? HD-SDI to HDMI? HD-SDI to SDI?
And how signal in 4K from Scarlet can be seen by TV which only HD?

For example if buy this tv

So in which way is it possible to see picture from camera on TV?

I connect a TCL 40" via HDMI as a clean feed for use as a preview monitor. No adapters needed. Also have used a Dell 17" monitor as a preview feed.

It is arising some chances) Maybe is it needs to buy some special TV with some special options?
Why so not expensive tv as TCL can show the picture from Scarlet but Philips can't?
Or maybe buy Dell 17"?

I don't know Alexey... but my TV was just a "good deal" purchase from Amazon. I suspect as long as it is HDMI it could work with the camera, but maybe some others who have used different models could chime in. And I've also had a perfect feed using HDMI to a Dell "23 2k monitor. (It's a couple of years old and I'm not sure they make the model anymore.) These are inexpensive monitors and TVs I'm talking about. The TV was something like $300 bucks at the time and the Dell 2k monitor, of which I have three, were from 2 to 3 hundred dollars US as memory serves. But like I said, no special internals that I know of.
 
If you're buying something new (as a TV) chances are it will be OK via HDMI.

If not, you will have 2 choices in terms of signal conversion...

From your Scarlet, go HDMI>HDMI Convertor (to simply convert the HDMI to non-progressive HDMI) or HD-SDI>HDMI (in which case the converter is taking the SDI signal, converting that and then giving you a HDMI connection).

Really, there are lots of ways to do this!

But, this is the lower end of your spend - it looks like you're purchasing everything now (?). That's good, as you don't have any legacy kit? If you have older kit that is more broadcast based (or built around interlace signals), then you need to be careful.

I have not tired this set-up myself... my Epic plays HDMI to my Panasonic plasma TV & via SDI to my JVC DT-V24's.

In terms of sound - all rushes are mute, so I can't say if audio comes through HDMI :)

Are you getting the touchscreen? If you are, you can hold back on purchasing another monitor until you've received your Scarlet - then you can test with your camera :)
 
I took my camera and a short HDMI cable to my local electronics super store to to make sure the monitor I bought worked with the camera. The sales guy got all excited, "That's a RED camera, isn't it!"
 
If you can, i still would suggest getting a production monitor in the field. Color precision, SDI, frame guides, really takes the headache out. There are plenty of used ones on the market at reasonable prices.

Good advice. However, there are times when I would rather leave my Panasonic 17" in its case and take a $200 computer monitor or HDTV to set.

It is very expensive way around 2K.
I think TV set or comp monitor is the most inexpensive way.

Of course you should always get what you can afford. If you can find an affordable (i got an amazing broadcast 20" JVC monitor for $1400 used) it's heads and shoulders better than a TV.
 
Everything is found more simply, it was needed just from LCD/EVF choose HDMI output in the monitor settings and you will see the picture on the tv so it is easy to use any tv as field monitor. The next step is to find the way to power tv from v-mount battery.
 
I think the issue is that RED cameras don't send a typical HDMI signal. HDMI signal is typically 60i and many TV monitors expect that signal. REDs signal in both the SDI and HDMI are progressive. Just test before buying.
