  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Is it OK to use an FL lens to EF Canon mount adapter on Scarlet and Epic?

I just got this $30 Fotodiox to allow me to put my old Canon FL lenses on my T2i and it works pretty well, just a bit of a white promist look is added, and just a simple lens error message I can easily click past. Then I thought, hey, I've got a Scarlet shoot this weekend that my FL f1.2 50mm could really help out in, I wonder if I can just pop it on the RED Canon mount and manually operate...

But I feel like I remember someone from RED first saying that 3rd party adapters voids the warranty... and then they said, oh, it was a wiring glitch on the first cameras off our assembly line, everyone is covered... I can't find any up to date info on this. The Scarlet I'm going to use is about #001600, so that's probably safe, right?

From what I understand of the terms and conditions of the RED warranty (and have not been corrected): if anything non-RED is used with your camera it voids your warranty. That would include any non-RED lenses of any brand or mount.

Dumb lens with a dumb adapter shouldn't mess up your Scarlet's Canon mount, but that doesn't mean it won't. Your Scarlet might read it as there being no lens and do something crazy. If it does it WILL NOT be covered under warranty. If you have insurance maybe it can cover it if something happens.

I wouldn't take the risk if I had a shoot coming up tho. I'd wait until the shoot was done before testing anything like this. In theory it should work fine as long as you have manual iris control.

i have all manual contax zeiss primes on my scarlet as well as a canon 70-200. the zeiss primes are cy mount with a fotodiox adaptor to ef mount. Works like a charm, havent had a single issue going from one to the other. Produces beautiful images.

Hmmm, but that would include all canon lenses on a RED canon mount. That doesn't make much sense.

That's really what I wanted to hear, thanks. I guess they just get really broad with what will let them void the warranty to cover themselves in case someone tries to do something crazy like wire AC power directly into the DC lemo or something. If they ever decided to just deny warranty coverage to anyone who admitted to using a Canon lens on their RED camera, you would see a lot of angry people taking to the internet. The fact that this is an occurrence I've never heard about tells me, RED is taking a very rational a fair approach to determining when they have to void warranties.

I can say first hand that I had to send my Scarlet in earlier on for strange behavior and I admitted up front to using GMP batteries and they never even hesitated. I didn't even have to pay for shipping.
