Hey Phil, did I miss something? When did someone from RED say the Dragon would go into the Scarlet? All I saw was Jarred assuring a pathway to Dragon.
From Jarred a few days back:
I can tell you right now Scarlet, as it sits , cannot handle the Dragon.
But as it sits, neither can the Epic.
One way or another we will make sure Scarlet customers have a pathway to the Dragon.
It is a complicated problem, but a good problem to have.

I think you're reading it the same way I did. It's possible the pathway to Dragon for Scarlet's will be by trade-in only. Here's what I wrote before I saw your post -
Just the other day Jarred said on the forums here that neither the Scarlet or Epic internals can currently handle what the Dragon sensor will require of them. It was also mentioned recently that the Dragon upgrade for Epics will now require replacing their internal boards, when it was originally said that would only be the case for the Scarlet. While that means the 6K Dragon upgrade for Epics might not be as cost-effective for RED as it was before, it also means the Epics and Scarlets are now on more of an even footing in terms of what will be required to get them up to Dragon level. So, maybe the Scarlet to Dragon upgrade won't be more expensive than the Epic to Dragon upgrade now. Who knows.
Jarred has also stated they can't say what the path is to get the Scarlets (or perhaps more accurately Scarlet owners) upgraded to Dragon sensor camera's, until they actually start manufacturing the sensors and boards required. One could assume a large part of that is due to their wanting to take the same approach to camera feature differentiation as they have done with the current Scarlet's and Epic's. Which is to say, the boards/chips that can't quite handle the highest standard of performance, get put into the lower-featured camera's. And they won't know what's what until they start getting batches of the things made and tested.
For those who just want to upgrade to the current MX Epic , it might also be possible that if the Epics that get sent in and gutted for Dragon sensors and Dragon capable boards don't need their regular internals anymore, perhaps they can be made available for Scarlet owners to upgrade to, and that such an upgrade for current Scarlet owners would be cheaper than buying a regular (current MX sensor) Epic. Or maybe it would just be easier to re-house and sell off the left-overs from the upgraded Epics as battle-tested MX Epics (similar to how the recent Red One's have been), and a current Scarlet owner can just buy one of those if they want to upgrade to MX Epic level.
For a Scarlet (owner) to get to a Dragon Epic though...would RED do a trade-in deal where you surrender your Scarlet altogether to offset the price of buying a new Dragon Epic (with RED then re-selling the scarlet's as battle-tested at some later date)? Or could they actually re-furbish a Scarlet to a fully or partially featured Dragon Epic if the Scarlet and Epic form-factors aren't that different inside? Either way, the cost to upgrade would surely be somewhere between 6K and (at an extreme) 17K (the approximate price difference between a Scarlet @8K and a fully functional Dragon Epic @25K).
The clearest, most certain path to get to a Dragon Epic at the moment is to simply buy an Epic now and then upgrade it for 6K later.
Anything else is a wait and see game.
