  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

What the hell!!! Is the Hobbit in 4K 48fps 3D for real???
Now Im unsure if something like this even exist. Our Czech Warner distributor and cinemas want to convince me that there is impossible to see this feature in 3D in 4K 48fps!!! One say that 3D from 4K is like more that only 2.7K resolution and others that is problem for RAID to even play all that 3D 4K HFR data...

True or complete BS?

Omg what the century is today?
:badputer:

According to the most recent DCP spec, you can either have 48fps or 4k, and this is just in 2D.

Supported frame rates are:
24, 25, 30, 48, 50, and 60 fps @ 2K
24, 25, and 30 fps @ 4K
24 and 48 fps @ 2K stereoscopic

Dang ... So probabaly only 2 persons can watch Hobbit in 4K 48fps 3D - Peter and Jim.

In this case the 4K was generated from a 5K acquisition, so it should be solid, and not 2.7k. But yeah, that's a lot of bandwidth, so I won't be surprised to watch it in 2k. I haven't seen anything in 4k ever, even though I shot my first film on Red in the spring of 2007.

True IMAX (70/15 film ones) will probably show DMR blowup from a 5K source of The Hobbit, which isn't that bad. Way better than digital 2K image stretched on a giant screen, like I've experienced few times (it ain't pretty). It's gonna be 24 fps in the majority of IMAX theaters, though (except the ones very recently upgraded). Barco, Sony and Red laser 4K 3D HFR projectors can't come out and be installed everywhere soon enough. I needed it like before yesterday.

Hoping to see the Hobbit in both 2K S3D 48fps AND in 4K 2D 48fps, plus maybe even 4K 2D 24fps as a reference point. I'm forecasting that the combination of 48fps and S3D will actually be the revelation, even at 2K, for most viewers. Keep in mind that the 2K from the super-sampled source might actually present more resolvable picture elements with most in use hardware due to optical design characteristics in the projection lenses - essentially, a better pitch match for more mid-band contrast and more frequencies over Nyqvist. Also keep in mind that a 4K DCP has less bits per pixel so there is some inevitable softening in an entropy encoder like JPEG2000 that negates some of the theoretical resolution advantage.

I fully expect the next generation of 4K projection systems to have much better MTF and high frequency detail. Hope I'm right ;-)

There was no 4K sfx done for Hobbit, was there?
