  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Is Epic Armor Transferrable?

Not fully, if I remember correctly.

Here's the TOC's - might be different for an Epic M. http://www.red.com/terms-conditions

6b. Optional Extended Warranty – A non-transferable Extended Warranty (Red Armor) is available on select products for an additional cost. The Extended Warranty may only be purchased once during a product’s lifetime and must be purchased prior to product shipment. The Extended Warranty is for a period (specified on the invoice) after the standard warranty ends, covering parts and labor for the covered product. The Extended Warranty does not cover Digital Media and Batteries. The Extended Warranty is non-transferrable. If the covered product is sold, the Extended Warranty automatically terminates. The Extended Warranty covers parts and labor charges for covered products that have been returned pre-paid by insured shipment to an Authorized Service Center. All Extended Warranty returns shall be done in accordance with Red’s RMA policy. In the event of a covered claim, Red will repair or replace (at Red’s discretion) the product with a new, rebuilt or refurbished product of equal or similar features and functionality. Any repaired or replaced product shall be warranted for a period the greater of (i) the balance of the applicable Extended Warranty period relating to such product or (ii) ninety (90) days after it is received by Buyer. Only the components that were repaired or replaced will be eligible for the 90-day period as set forth above. The Extended Warranty is only available once per product.

I purchased a couple of used Scarlets. One I was interested in had the Armor. I asked my rep. and she said that Armors are not transferrable. Nothing they can do. It is not possible. Should it be? Absolutely! Just because the camera changes hands doesn't change anything, specially if you send it to RED for a check up...

A good insurance policy trumps a warranty anyway. More protection for all dumb things that can go wrong out there.. Also I bought used and couldn't get a warranty so the insurance is my work around essentially lol

Shes recommended pretty highly on RU in many threads so I went with her. No claims yet, hopefully never lol!

And Toshiba memory cards shouldnt be marked up 5000% or whatever the insane markups is.....I guess Red needs to make their profits any way they can but not being able to transfer the extended warranty does seem really low especially considering they charge an ownership transfer fee....just how Red rolls.

So you have to be smarter than Red here, oh I know Red is the smartest and best company in the world. Whatever they do is right because they nake this sport more affordable, whatever.

Let's see I am just a big dummy. What should I do, please help me. Please.

OK. I will ask any business man. People here are just not business men. They are artists. Mostly starving artists

Your buyer wants the warranty for something you have purchased for your business and now want to sell, but the warranty is non transferrable from the original owner. Who wouldn't want a warranty and what original owner would not want to get full value for what he paid for?. Of course what you paid for was a limited term or the term of your ownership, which ever comes first. I know most artists can't really read and never read the fine print.

So now you are fornicated? Right. I'll buy you a drink you poor abused suffering bastard. We will bitch about the policy. People will sympathsize. It maKes no sense.

What a minute maybe there is a solution. Yea? Yea. I am a freekin genius. Let's ask a real businessman how he might handle it.

So if you are the seller and the buyer wants the warranty protection, you say to the buyer instead of buying the equipment from me now, just lease it from me for the term of the warranty and you will give him a written option to buy the equipment at the end of the lease term for say $1. So the ownership doesn't transfer until the end of the warranty period.

If the POS breaks, its sent in under the owners name, the lessor. That's legalise for the person leasing it to another.

There are tax implications for both the buyer and seller. i won't go into these however.

After I posted this I asked my wife, not a business person but way above the intelligence of your basic fim artists, sorry cheap shot, I really wish I had some artistic talent, i don't, what she would do if she owned something with such a non transferrable warranty and wanted to sell it.

She didn't flinch one secoind. Just lease or rent it to the buyer with a token payment for full ownership the second the term of the warranty expires.

That's if you don't need to turn the cash into another investment.

Paul. You must be an artist. :)

Please read my posts carefully. The lease cost would be essentially the full selling price with a token conversion to sale payment of say $1. So the seller gets essentially all of its money.

I may be an artist, but I've also been self employed for over 20 years, so please indulge me. :-)
Put it another way. If you were the buyer and fronted 99% of the cost, but still did not own the item, would you do that? Lawyers aside (and you'd probably need to employ one to draw up this contract, so there's a hidden cost there), there's a lot of trust involved in the ownership details. Either way, one party has to absorb some risk for this scenario to continue. And in the case of an Epic that's less than a year old, that could be well over two years.
