Is Apple ProRes a 4:4:4 codec when "enable 4:4:4 chroma filtering" is selected ?

thanks

Antoine

No Apple Pro Res is 444:444:444.

Is this enough for somebody like a ... ????!!!!!!!!!

patience is a virtue ...

patience is a virtue ...

Any update on the ProRes 4:4:4 information?

Van,

You need to be patient .... keep shooting great RED footage and your virtue will be rewarded ... maybe not in Heaven, but at least on the silver screen ;-)

You can use Cineform 444 or raw right now.

Mattes, Titles/Text are also problematic with 422 based imagery.
Thats why broadcasters have 444 in the first place. It allows for better chromakeys, as well as cleaner graphics.

In the film side, 444 helps with the same issue above, and also helps to prevent odd looking artifacts that can be introduced when you have to contrasting pixels side by side in the same 422 unit.

Anyone care to venture a guess what percentage of HD deliverables are specced for 4:4:4?

What percentage of facilities, even the big dogs in LA, do you think maintain 4:4:4 throughout post?

Don't get me wrong, I'm an image snob and while color grade-ability is mostly about bit depth, 4:4:4 is a plus.
I'm in! 4:4:4 or death - as long as I'm not writing the checks for the infrastructure to support it :cryin:

FWIW there seems to be more interest in using the extra bandwidth of 3G (not that 3G ) or dual link to push 1080/60P at 4:2:2 for sports and high profile event coverage rather than more accurate chroma.

If Apple wants to include a 4:4:4 version of ProRes in the new FCS that's cool. Now, how about a universally accepted codec for data deliverables that isn't bound to one platform/NLE. Cineform is the prettiest girl at the dance, but AFAIK it is not used by a large enough population or backed by a big enough entity to win that battle.

Almost all of them, when they're asked to. They're not usually asked to, especially for broadcast.

Cineform is just as proprietary as ProRes. You will see file based deliveries likely starting as early as the middle of this coming season by at least one network. At the moment, they're talking about MPEG, but that could easily change - although it won't change to anything controlled by one company.

Only 320 Mbps for ProRes 4:4:4 w/o Alpha Channel @ 1080i. Not bad at all.
